As the prosecution edges closer to resting its case in Hunter Biden’s federal gun trial, critical testimonies and evidential revelations have captured the courtroom’s attention. Wilmington, Delaware, serves as the crucible for the high-profile trial where Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, faces allegations of lying on an ATF form when purchasing a firearm in 2018, amidst struggles with drug addiction.
The week witnessed emotional and incisive accounts from Hallie Biden, the widow of the president’s late son, Beau Biden, and at one time, Hunter Biden’s romantic partner. Hallie’s testimony provided an intimate glimpse into Hunter Biden’s drug use around the time he acquired the firearm. She recounted discovering the gun and “remnants” of crack cocaine in Hunter’s vehicle, reacting by discarding the weapon in a panic—a decision that later sparked an intense, albeit private, text exchange with Hunter.
Prosecutors presented surveillance videos documenting Hallie Biden’s disposal and retrieval attempts of the firearm, while former Delaware State Police lieutenant Millard Greer and a man named Edward Banner testified to the gun’s eventual recovery. Banner told the court he found the gun in a supermarket’s trash and kept it safe until law enforcement’s intervention.
In addition to Hallie Biden’s testimony, other important witnesses took the stand. Naomi Biden, Hunter’s daughter, provided a contrasting perspective, suggesting Hunter appeared to be improving during her last visit to him at a rehab facility and testifying to his seemingly hopeful demeanor after the gun purchase. However, under cross-examination, it became evident that Naomi’s interactions with her father did not include witnessing drug use, and her testimony did not rule out the possibility of her father using drugs after she returned his truck to him.
Defense attorney Abbe Lowell’s cross-examination highlighted periods when Hunter Biden’s behavior seemed stable and questioned the clarity of the memories relayed by witnesses, aiming to cast doubt on the prosecution’s narrative that Hunter was an active drug user at the time of the gun purchase.
President Joe Biden issued a statement earlier this week, saying: “I am the President, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today.”
