As the frosty relations between Moscow and Washington plunge into a chillier phase, Russia has taken the unprecedented step of officially branding the United States as an “enemy” state for the first time, escalating tensions over the situation in Ukraine. This bold shift was confirmed by Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a press briefing.
“We are now an enemy country for them, just as they are for us,” Peskov remarked, which previously ranged from “unfriendly states” to “opponent.” Despite this, Peskov has previously stressed that there is no anti-American sentiment in Moscow and expressed optimism that the two countries will eventually realize that their peoples are not enemies. On the contrary, Putin sees Western elites as Russia’s real enemies and Ukraine as a tool in their hands.
The declaration follows a series of incidents, including the prevention of former US Marine Corps intelligence officer Scott Ritter’s travel to Russia and the confiscation of his passport by US officials. Peskov addressed this incident during the briefing, attributing it to “the latest manifestation of the rabid campaign” aimed at hindering Americans from engaging with Russia, though a State Department spokesperson declined to comment on individual cases.
The Kremlin’s change in rhetoric comes on the heels of the Biden administration’s authorization for Ukraine to engage Russian targets using American-supplied weapons. Last week, the Biden administration said it was working at “lightning speed” to allow Kiev to use its weapons against specific targets inside Russia.
The Kremlin’s newly adversarial posture dovetails with President Putin’s stern warnings to Western nations over their support for Ukraine. Putin has cautioned that arming Ukraine could lead to Moscow arming the adversaries of those nations.
Putin, speaking to editors at an economic forum in St. Petersburg, underscored the dangerous implications of the West’s direct involvement in the war. “If we see that these countries become involved in a war against us, what they are doing makes them directly involved in a war against the Russian Federation, we reserve the right to act the same way,” he said.
