In a developing story that could have significant implications for the 2024 elections in Michigan, allegations of fraudulent ballot signature practices have surfaced, putting several Republican Senate candidates under scrutiny. Michigan Democrats have called upon state election officials to investigate potential forgeries and fraudulent signature-gathering tactics tied to Republican Senate hopefuls, emphasizing the necessity to maintain the integrity of the state’s election process.
At the center of the controversy are Republican U.S. Senate candidates, including former Representative Mike Rogers, libertarian-leaning Justin Amash, businessman Sandy Pensler, and former candidate Peter Meijer. A letter submitted by attorneys for the Michigan Democratic Party and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) to the Board of State Canvassers outlined concerns regarding nominating petitions that featured patterns indicative of potential forgery. The letter points to petition sheets that appeared to be filled out by a single individual, voters’ names showing up across multiple petitions in varying handwriting, and other signs of potential fraud.
“The apparent fraud uncovered demands an immediate investigation” and that the state Bureau of Elections and the canvassing board “should uphold their responsibility to protect the integrity of Michigan’s elections and conduct a full, thorough examination,” Michigan Democratic Party Chairwoman Lavora Barnes said in a statement.
The Republican candidates have been quick to dismiss the accusations. Rogers’ campaign spokesman, Chris Gustafson, branded the letter an “antidemocratic stunt” orchestrated by allies of Representative Elissa Slotkin, the Democratic frontrunner for the Senate nomination. Meanwhile, Pensler’s adviser, Stu Sandler, framed the allegations as a Democratic attempt to “eliminate Republicans from the ballot.” “Sandy Pensler turned in over 26,000 signatures. He clearly qualifies for the ballot which is why no timely challenge was filed,” Sandler said in a statement.
The significance of these allegations is magnified by Michigan’s key battleground status, where the seat left open by retiring Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow is expected to be fiercely contested. As the state continues to swing between Republican and Democratic choices in elections, any challenge to ballot access could be pivotal.
This is not the first instance where Michigan Republicans have faced scrutiny over ballot signatures. In 2022, five GOP candidates for governor were barred from running due to insufficient valid signatures, with the Michigan Elections Bureau identifying numerous invalid and fraudulent submissions. Although the candidates denied wrongdoing and state officials did not accuse them of intentionally submitting fraudulent signatures, three individuals connected to petition circulation firms were later charged in relation to the fraudulent signatures.
