Donald Trump, the former U.S. president, is not one to hold back his feelings, especially when it comes to personal attacks. Yet, when the tables turn, and Trump becomes the target of similar disparagement, his reaction speaks volumes about the sensitivity he harbors toward certain epithets. The recent uproar concerns an attack ad from President Joe Biden’s campaign, which draws attention to comments Trump allegedly made about U.S. soldiers, including those killed in combat.
The contentious comments in question date back to a 2018 incident when Trump reportedly labeled fallen U.S. soldiers as ‘suckers’ and “losers” during discussions about a canceled visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France. Despite staunch denials from Trump and his campaign, the comments were reported by The Atlantic and later confirmed by John Kelly, Trump’s former White House chief of staff.
The Biden campaign capitalized on this sore spot by releasing an ad that featured these reported remarks, coinciding with Biden’s visit to Normandy to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. In response, Trump took to his social media platform and a rally in Las Vegas to vehemently demand the ad’s removal. “The Military hates Crooked Joe, and all of the failure he represents. Take down the Fake Ad, Joe,” Trump posted on Truth Social. He described the ad and its creators as “sick people” and unleashed a stream of refutations against the allegations.
Chris LaCivita, Trump’s co-campaign manager and a Gulf War combat veteran, fired back, accusing the Biden campaign of peddling a “fake and thoroughly debunked story.” LaCivita sought to shift the narrative, attacking Biden for his own gaffes, such as allegedly exhibiting a lack of respect during a ceremony for soldiers killed in Afghanistan. LaCivita’s near-200-word statement also reminded the public of Biden’s alleged disrespect for military service, contrasting it with Trump’s defense of his own record.
Insiders from Trump’s orbit admit that the former president is particularly wounded by the ‘suckers’ and “losers” narrative. A former senior Trump White House official, granted anonymity, opined, “He just has no concept of service.” A high-ranking Trumpworld strategist suggested that the label “loser” is perhaps Trump’s greatest fear, highlighting a core insecurity linked to the 2020 election loss and his conviction on criminal charges.
