The 2008 film The Incredible Hulk, starring Edward Norton and Liv Tyler, is finally coming to Disney+ on June 16, 2023. The film was previously owned by Universal, but the rights have reverted to Marvel Studios after 15 years.
The film tells the origin story of how Bruce Banner became the Hulk after being exposed to gamma radiation. He is pursued by the military, led by his girlfriend’s father General Ross, while looking for a cure for his condition. The film also introduces Samuel Sterns, a scientist who helps Banner but becomes corrupted by his own experiments.
The Incredible Hulk was the second movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following Iron Man. However, it is often overlooked by fans and critics, as Norton was replaced by Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk in subsequent MCU appearances. Norton reportedly clashed with Marvel over the creative direction of the film and did not want to reprise his role.
The film grossed $264.8 million worldwide and received mixed reviews. Some praised Norton’s performance and the action scenes, while others criticized the plot and the CGI effects. The film also featured a cameo by Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, who meets Ross at a bar and hints at the formation of the Avengers.
The addition of The Incredible Hulk to Disney+ follows Sony’s Spider-Man films that were recently added to the streamer. Liv Tyler and Tim Blake Nelson are also returning to the MCU in Captain America: Brave New World, which is set to debut on July 26, 2024. They will reprise their roles of Betty Ross and Samuel Sterns in the fourth Captain America film.
The Incredible Hulk is not the only gamma-irradiated title on Disney+. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law debuted on the streamer on Aug. 18, 2022. It follows Jennifer Walters, who is exposed to the blood of her cousin Bruce Banner and becomes the green, crime-fighting She-Hulk.
“Gamma gamma hey! The world’s favorite gamma ray antihero is coming to Disney+ on Friday,” Deadline announced. Variety called it “a notable shift” that the rights have reverted to Marvel Studios after 15 years. Yahoo Entertainment described the film as “looking for a cure for his power while cut off from his true love.” MSN said that “the origin story of the Hulk details how his exposure to gamma rays turned him into the misunderstood man-monster who gets stronger as he gets madder.”
Fans of the Hulk can now enjoy this film on Disney+ and see how it fits into the larger MCU narrative. As Disney+ tweeted, “Smashing news.”
