Just seven months out from a potential presidential election face-off, polling data indicates President Joe Biden is gaining ground in pivotal battleground states against his presumed Republican rival, former President Donald Trump. In the blue wall territories of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, the numbers are suggesting a shift, potentially altering the dynamics of the 2024 race.
In Wisconsin, a state critical to securing the presidency, Biden has edged ahead, leading Trump by a point after trailing him in previous polls. This shift is significant considering Wisconsin’s role in flipping from red to blue in the 2020 election, showcasing a potential repeat performance for Biden. The Democratic incumbent and his supporters, about 45% of whom view their vote as a stark opposition to Trump, have reportedly been energized by this “negative energy,” an echo of the sentiments that bolstered Biden’s previous campaign.
Despite Biden’s boost in Wisconsin, the race remains tight. Both candidates are locked in a tie in both Pennsylvania and Michigan, states that were leaning towards Trump in earlier polls. These states form part of the so-called blue wall that, if secured, could significantly impact the electoral outcome.
While Biden is making strides in these key areas, Trump maintains his lead in other battleground states, including Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and North Carolina, albeit with varying degrees of support. Nevertheless, Biden has successfully narrowed the margins in some of these territories, such as Nevada, where his deficit has been reduced to just two points.
Jason Miller, a Trump campaign spokesperson, pointed to Trump’s 47%-43% lead across the seven swing states, telling Bloomberg: “Polling continues to show that voters are sick of Joe Biden’s crushing inflation, porous southern border and his insane EV mandate that will kill the US auto industry.” However, sentiments are fluid, and the state of local economies, particularly in the Upper Midwest, could play a crucial role as voters are starting to report improvements in their daily lives. This local economic sentiment may be one of the factors contributing to the observed shift in voter preferences.
Trump’s campaign faces challenges of its own, with Trump facing legal troubles that have raised questions about his capacity to campaign effectively. In contrast, Biden’s campaign has capitalized on recent developments, such as his State of the Union address and subsequent aggressive campaign schedule across battleground states.
Over half of Trump’s supporters in the seven states back raising taxes on higher earners, along with nearly all of Biden’s supporters, providing bipartisan support for Biden’s proposal. The two sides are more aligned on tariffs, with more Biden backers than not agreeing with most Trump supporters in favoring a 10% tariff on all imports or a 60% tariff on imports from China, as proposed by Trump.
