Ukraine has commenced the use of advanced long-range ballistic missiles supplied in secrecy by the United States, showcasing a significant escalation in firepower and strategic capability. These Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) have marked their operational debut, striking Russian military positions in the occupied Crimea and other areas under Russian control.
Long sought by Ukrainian leaders, the new missiles give Ukraine nearly double the striking distance — up to 300 kilometers (190 miles) — that it had with the mid-range version of the weapon that it received from the U.S. last October. One of the officials said the U.S. is providing more of these missiles in a new military aid package signed by President Joe Biden on Wednesday. This extended range is of paramount importance to Ukrainian forces, offering the ability to hit Russian logistical nodes and troop concentrations away from front-line dangers.
American officials have been meticulous in the decision to supply Ukraine with these weapons, cognizant of the potential to escalate conflict. The contemplation of these risks culminated in President Joe Biden’s approval for the release of ATACMS, with the additional weaponry included in a newly signed military aid package.
The administration’s prior hesitation stemmed from concerns that the missiles could be utilized to strike deep within Russian territory, potentially provoking Moscow. However, a shift in stance occurred as the dynamics on the battlefield evolved and as the Biden administration responded to Russia’s acquisition and deployment of long-range missiles from North Korea.
Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Christopher Grady conveyed the well-considered decision to provide these systems, noting, “I think the time is right, and the boss (Biden) made the decision the time is right to provide these based on where the fight is right now.”
Despite the increased firepower, officials have underscored the directive that these weapons must be used within Ukrainian sovereign territory, including Crimea, as per the U.S. government’s view. This stipulation is meant to prevent the conflict from escalating beyond its current borders.
The ATACMS’ first use in Ukraine was revealed only after their employment on the battlefield, striking a military airfield in Dzhankoi, Crimea, and later targeting forces east of the occupied city of Berdyansk. The release of this information was delayed due to operational security and Ukrainian authorization.
Speaking on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the new aid will give the country a chance at “victory” as it defends itself from Russia.
“I think this support will really strengthen the armed forces, I pray, and we will have a chance at victory if Ukraine really gets the weapons system, which we need so much, which thousands of soldiers need so much,” he said.
