President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has sounded an urgent alert regarding the Kremlin’s alleged plans to sabotage an upcoming peace summit scheduled for June in Switzerland. During a meeting with representatives of partner states, international organizations, and Ukrainian diplomats, Zelensky shared intelligence reports that not only indicate Russia’s intent to derail the summit but also detail a specific strategy to achieve it.
“We have precise intelligence, specific data – that Russia not only wants to disrupt the Peace Summit, but also has a specific plan on how to do it, how to reduce the number of participating countries, how to act so that there is no peace for even longer,” Zelensky told attendees. He stressed the importance of working together and in unity to counter these disruptive efforts.
Zelensky’s remarks come at a critical juncture for Ukraine as it continues to defend its sovereignty in the face of Russian aggression. The war has taken a significant toll, with the Ukrainian General Staff reporting that Russia has suffered substantial troop losses since the conflict began in February 2022. Meanwhile, Western military support for Ukraine is increasing, Ukrainian forces will enhance the efficiency of their long-range assaults in Russia with more Western military assistance to assist Kyiv in influencing the war “in much stronger ways,” as stated by the head of the U.K. military, Tony Radakin.
On the diplomatic front, Zelensky urges the global community to take the Russian threat seriously and collaborate to ensure the success of the peace summit. Ukraine’s peace plan includes withdrawing all Russian troops from Ukrainian territory, restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity, releasing all prisoners of war and deportees, preventing ecocide in Ukraine, and holding accountable those responsible for war crimes.
Amidst these developments, the European Union is set to escalate economic pressure on Moscow with its 14th round of sanctions, focusing on the shadow fleet involved in transporting North Korean equipment. Reuters reported that Russia’s April oil and gas revenues will nearly double compared to the same month last year, indicating that Western sanctions against Moscow’s oil and gas sectors have not yielded the desired results. Russia has also offset its significant battlefield losses by strengthening its military connections with other rogue nations, particularly Iran and North Korea.
In a show of solidarity with Kyiv, nations like Poland are stepping up to facilitate the return of Ukrainian military-aged men residing abroad, and Latvia has successfully raised over half a billion dollars for drones for Ukraine.
The world anticipates the Global Peace Summit, Zelensky’s call for vigilance and cooperation underscores.Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said that Moscow has to be at a peace summit “sooner or later,” even if it does not attend its first meeting.
