Former AG Barr’s Comments on Trump’s Rhetoric About Executing Rivals Spark Controversy

    Published on

In a recent CNN interview, former Attorney General Bill Barr made startling admissions regarding former President Donald Trump’s temperamental comments during his tenure in office. Barr, who once warned that re-electing Trump would be like “playing Russian roulette with the country,” casually mentioned that Trump often talk of executing political rivals.

During the interview with CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins, Barr was questioned about previous statements made by Trump’s communications director, Alyssa Farah Griffin, that Trump suggested execution for a White House leaker. Barr did not recall the specific word “executing” but did not dispute the likelihood of such rhetoric. “The president would lose his temper and say things like that. I doubt he would’ve actually carried it out,” said Barr, suggesting that Trump’s comments were not to be taken literally, as they were typically expressions of anger.

This led Collins to probe deeper, asking if Trump would speak similarly on other occasions. Barr confirmed that Trump did have a tendency to make similar remarks but reiterated that they should not always be interpreted as literal intentions. “He would say things similar to that on occasions to blow off steam. But I wouldn’t take them literally every time he did it,” Barr stated.

when Collins inquired why Barr dismissed the potential danger of such threats, to which Barr replied that it was just his “feeling” based on his experience working with Trump. He elaborated, “Having worked for him and seen him in action, I don’t think he would actually go and kill political rivals and things like that.” Barr underscored his belief that Trump was not a serious threat to democracy in the way an autocrat might be.

Later in the interview, Collins read aloud Trump’s mocking response to Barr following his endorsement. Barr replied by effectively kowtowing: “Classic Trump,” he said. The “real threat to Democracy,” Barr claimed, came from the Biden administration, as opposed to the former president who has been indicted for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection.
