Florida’s Six-Week Abortion Ban: A Dire Shift for Access and Financial Strain

    Published on

The imposition of Florida’s six-week abortion ban, which goes into effect on May 1, signifies a profound alteration in the reproductive health landscape, presenting far-reaching consequences beyond the state’s borders. This law replaces the 15-week ban that had been in effect since July 2022 and further restricts access to abortions for thousands of residents in Florida.

“This is the biggest change to the abortion access landscape since Roe was overturned,” Stephanie Loraine Piñeiro, executive director of Florida Access Network, stressed the irreversible damage to the infrastructure of abortion access this law could cause.

With the six-week cutoff, abortion funds are grappling with escalating costs. The Tampa Bay Abortion Fund projects at least 90 percent of those seeking support will now need to travel out of state, skyrocketing costs from an average of $1,500 to $3,000 per patient. This increased financial burden is expected to strain the funds to their limits. In 2023, Florida Access Network was able to give $400,000 to 1,500 individuals. According to the Chicago Abortion Fund, individuals from Florida seeking abortions after 15 weeks have been traveling to Illinois. With an anticipated increase in individuals traveling from Florida and other southern states, the fund estimates that an extra $100,000 per month will be required to meet the demand.

Florida, the third most populous state in the U.S., has emerged as a prominent hub for abortion access in the Southeast region. This shift occurred as neighboring states implemented widespread abortion bans and restrictions subsequent to the Supreme Court’s June 2022 ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade. Data from the WeCount report, published in February by the Society of Family Planning, revealed that Florida conducted 15,000 more abortions than projected in the initial 15 months following the repeal of Roe. The state, which houses approximately 50 abortion clinics, carried out around 84,000 abortions last year, with roughly 8,000 of them being for individuals traveling from other states, as per state healthcare statistics.

Governor Ron DeSantis, who signed the bill into law, stated, “We don’t want to be an abortion tourism destination.” However, Dr. Robyn Schickler of Planned Parenthood highlighted the resulting medical quandary, with the law forcing doctors to weigh their medical judgments against potential legal repercussions.

In a rare glimmer of hope, Florida voters will have the chance to overturn the six-week ban in November through a ballot initiative that seeks to amend the state constitution to ensure access to an abortion up to 24 weeks. This initiative faces a steep uphill climb, requiring 60% approval to pass.
