In a significant show of force amidst strategic maneuvers in the Mediterranean, the US and French aircraft carriers, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and Charles de Gaulle, have docked at Souda Bay on Crete, serving as a stark reminder of NATO’s maritime strength.
The arrival of these mighty vessels is not just a routine port call; it’s the operational readiness and strategic partnership between the US and French navies. The Nimitz-class nuclear-powered USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, part of the US 5th Fleet, has been actively supporting Operation Prosperity Guardian and conducting self-defensive strikes in areas of Yemen controlled by Iranian-backed Houthis. Commander Rear Adm. Marc Miguez expressed his gratitude, stating, “We are incredibly grateful to Greece for hosting us during our very first port visit of the deployment.” The crew, having operated in some of the most challenging environments, found this visit well-deserved.
The French flagship, Charles de Gaulle, joined its American counterpart in a display of unity and power. The carrier, equipped with advanced weaponry and technology, including Dassault Rafale M and E-2C Hawkeye aircraft, is partaking in mission Aquila—a NATO deployment involving 15 countries in the Eastern Mediterranean. As the only non-US nuclear-powered carrier, Charles de Gaulle brings unique capabilities to the table, amplifying NATO’s maritime strike force.
The French deployment, announced by Rear Adm. Jacques Mallard, is marked by a new operational pattern where the identities of the accompanying warships remain undisclosed. This “leads to a certain confusion among our competitors,” Mallard explained. In addition, the deployment features multinational collaboration with surface ships and aircraft from Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and the United States.
Notably, the French Navy successfully conducted firings of Aster surface-to-air missiles shortly after departing for this deployment, showcasing the potency and precision of the carrier strike group’s defenses.
These exercises serve dual purposes: to monitor Russian naval activities in the eastern Mediterranean and to bolster the defensive posture of NATO allies in the Balkans. The presence of the USS Harry Truman, another US carrier, along with the deployment of KC-135 tankers to Greece, fortifies NATO’s eastern flank and ensures a heightened state of readiness.
The NATO alliance remains vigilant and unyielding in the defense of its member states and the maintenance of international maritime security. This collective power projection serves as a deterrent to potential adversaries and a testament to the alliance’s enduring commitment to safeguarding peace and stability in strategically significant waterways.
