Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has faced a unique set of health concerns with revelations about a brain worm incident that his campaign insists will not impede his capability to serve if elected. In a startling revelation made public through a 2012 divorce deposition, Kennedy disclosed that a worm once entered his brain, consumed part of it, and subsequently died. The peculiar medical case, which occurred over a decade ago, has drawn both curiosity and skepticism within political circles and the general public.
According to The New York Times, Kennedy’s cognitive struggles led to the discovery of the worm. Initially thought to be a brain tumor, it was later identified as a dead parasite. Infectious disease specialists suggest that the worm was likely a pork tapeworm larva, causing a condition called neurocysticercosis. This condition, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, can lead to seizures and other neurological symptoms.
Kennedy’s campaign has brushed aside concerns about his fitness for the presidency, stating that questioning his health is “a hilarious suggestion, given the competition.” A spokeswoman for the campaign emphasized that the issue was resolved over ten years ago and that Kennedy is in robust physical and mental health.
Beyond the parasitic infection, Kennedy has had other health challenges, including mercury poisoning and a history of atrial fibrillation. His high mercury levels were attributed to his consumption of fish, particularly tuna sandwiches. Kennedy also publicly acknowledged suffering from spasmodic dysphonia, a neurological condition affecting his vocal cords.
Despite the unusual history of health issues, Kennedy has maintained that they do not affect his cognitive abilities. He jovially offered to consume five more brain worms and still outperform current political rivals in a debate. This statement, shared on the social media platform X, reflects his confident stance on his health status.
Doctors not involved in Kennedy’s care have weighed in, clarifying that the type of parasite involved does not consume brain tissue but instead absorbs nutrients passively. They also noted that while neurocysticercosis can cause a range of health problems, the impacts can be limited and short-lived for most people, depending on the location of the parasite within the brain and other health factors.
