Over the weekend, aviation enthusiasts and families from across the region flocked to Dover Air Force Base for an event that promised—and delivered—spectacular aerial feats and the rumble of jet engines. The event that took center stage was none other than the First State Air Show. However, the uncontested star of the show was the F-35A Lightning II, making a majestic appearance in the skies to the awe of the public on Saturday and Sunday.
Admission to the air show was complementary, Friday’s show was limited to airmen and their families, the public can watch on Saturday and Sunday. Starting with the gates opening at 9 a.m., and culminating with a variety of performances, from Rob Holland’s aerobatics to the USAF Heritage Flight, coupling the F-35 with the classic P-51 Mustang.
The opening ceremonies began at 11:20 a.m., promptly followed by the National Anthem accompanying Rob Holland’s circling of the flag jumper. The air show attendees witnessed the precision and discipline of the US Army Golden Knights, followed by a mix of modern and historical aviation with demonstrations ranging from the USAF’s C-5M Super Galaxy to the venerable Warbird flights.
The F-35A Lightning II demonstration was particularly anticipated, and it didn’t disappoint. The F-35A is an agile, versatile, high-performance, 9g capable multirole fighter that combines stealth, sensor fusion and unprecedented situational awareness. The air show will end at 4:30 p.m.
Belgium’s new F-35A, adorned with a full-color flag. The aircraft, took off around from Lockheed Martin Fort Worth facility, Texas, around 3.00PM LT and flew for about one hour.
