OpenAI’s Safety Ambitions in Question as It Disbands AI Risk Research Team

    Published on

In a move that has stunned the tech community, OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research lab, has reportedly disbanded its Superalignment team— a group dedicated to mitigating the long-term risks posed by AI. The dissolution comes in the wake of a leadership crisis and the departure of the team’s key leaders, Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, casting shadows on the organization’s commitment to AI safety.

The Superalignment team, assembled with a promise of 20% of OpenAI’s computing power over four years, was tasked with charting a path to “scientific and technical breakthroughs to steer and control AI systems much smarter than us.” Its goals were as ambitious as they were critical: ensuring the safe development of artificial general intelligence (AGI), a level of AI that could match or surpass human intellect across a wide array of tasks.

However, internal strife seems to have undercut the team’s objectives. Jan Leike, on departing, aired his concerns on social media platform X, stating, “I have been disagreeing with OpenAI leadership about the company’s core priorities for quite some time, until we finally reached a breaking point.” His profound statement, “These problems are quite hard to get right, and I am concerned we aren’t on a trajectory to get there,” puts into sharp relief the tension between research for safety and the pursuit of innovative products.

This tension was further exposed as Leike lamented that the “safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products.” He emphasized that building smarter-than-human machines is inherently perilous, asserting that OpenAI should adopt a “safety-first AGI company” stance.

The fallout is not just about personnel but also about the direction and future of OpenAI itself. After a leadership crisis that briefly ousted CEO Sam Altman, described by OpenAI’s board as not being “consistently candid in his communications with the board,” a reconciliation occurred, but not without lasting effects. Sutskever stepped down from the board, though stayed with the company until his recent exit, which was shortly followed by Leike’s resignation.

OpenAI’s response to the departure of these significant figures has been muted, with co-founder Greg Brockman and Altman stating on X that the company has “raised awareness of the risks and opportunities of AGI so that the world can better prepare for it.” Altman expressed his personal sadness at Leike’s departure and praised Sutskever as “easily one of the greatest minds of our generation.”

The safety team’s dissolution is juxtaposed against the backdrop of OpenAI’s rapid development and release of products, such as the GPT-4 model, part of ChatGPT, and plans for even more interactive AI capabilities, like video chats with ChatGPT. These advancements underscore a pivot toward product development, which may have exacerbated the divide between safety and progress.

In a way, the team’s reintegration into broader company research efforts can be seen as a reallocation of focus rather than a complete abandonment of safety concerns. John Schulman, co-leading AI model fine-tuning, now heads the alignment work and the Preparedness team remains dedicated to mitigating potential catastrophic AI risks.
