Zelenskiy’s Call to Arms: A Plea for Immediate Action and Deeper Involvement from Allies

    Published on

As the conflict in Ukraine intensifies, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is urging Western allies to accelerate their military support and become more actively involved in the war. Marking five years since his inauguration and in the throes of a harsh military confrontation, Zelenskiy’s impassioned appeals highlight the urgency for a shift in international approach to the crisis.

“A very powerful wave is going on in Donbas,” Zelenskiy described the current situation, where Russian forces have mounted a fresh offensive in the Kharkiv direction and are engaging in fierce battles in the east. The Ukrainian President acknowledged that while the situation north of Kharkiv is now “under control,” the broader context remains one of the most challenging since the full-scale invasion began.

The crux of Zelenskiy’s argument is that the timeliness of Western military support is crucial, yet consistently lagging. “Every decision to which we, then later everyone together, comes to is late by around one year,” he lamented, signaling the need for a new paradigm to maintain an advantage over Russian advances. Despite recent U.S. military packages arriving in Ukraine, the perception is of a reactive rather than a proactive stance from the West.

Zelenskiy is not only asking for faster delivery of aid but also for a strategic shift in how allies are engaged. He proposes that armed forces of neighboring NATO countries could proactively intercept Russian missiles over Ukrainian territory. Moreover, discussions with partners are underway for permission to use Western weapons against Russian military buildups on the border, and potentially inside Russian territory, although “so far, there is nothing positive.”

Western fears of military escalation with Russia remain a significant roadblock. Zelenskiy confronts this, stating, “It’s a question of will… everyone is scared of escalation. Everyone has gotten used to the fact that Ukrainians are dying – that’s not escalation for people.” This stark assessment underscores the perceived imbalance of the stakes involved, where Ukrainian fatalities have become an expected byproduct rather than a catalyst for escalation and action.

Reinforcing Ukraine’s defense capabilities, particularly in the air, is a top priority. “Russians are using 300 planes on the territory of Ukraine. We need at least 120, 130 planes to resist in the sky,” Zelenskiy underscored, pointing to an acute need for increased aerial defense.

On the political front, Zelenskiy aims to unify global opinion against Moscow in the upcoming international talks in Switzerland, from which Russia will be excluded. This endeavor seeks to compel Russia to respond to a broader international consensus rather than bilateral negotiations with Ukraine.

Furthermore, Zelenskiy is aware of the political undercurrents in the U.S. that could affect future support. While expressing understanding of some concerns regarding the Republican stance on Ukraine, he remains optimistic, believing that there isn’t a fundamental opposition to aiding Ukraine within the party.

Despite the international and military challenges, Zelenskiy remains steadfast in his belief that Ukraine can emerge victoriously, even as the word ‘victory’ becomes harder to define in a protracted and brutal conflict. “I think we need to walk this path to the end, preferably a victorious one,” he asserted, affirming his commitment to leading Ukraine through this struggle and calling on allies to match that commitment with immediate and robust support.
