British Paratroopers Hone Combat Skills in Estonia Amid Rising Russian Tensions

    Published on

Against the backdrop of swirling winds and a clear blue sky, British paratroopers from the 16 Air Assault Brigade have been engaging in rigorous training exercises in Estonia, preparing for the potential of direct military confrontation with Russia.

The British forces, alongside the US 82nd Airborne Division, are integral components of a rapid reaction force primed to respond should hostilities with Russia intensify. More than 90,000 troops are currently participating in coordinated drills across seven countries, a geographic span that underscores the seriousness with which NATO is preparing for potential conflict.

Brigadier Mark Berry, commander of the 16 Air Assault Brigade, underscored the relevance and adaptability of parachuting in modern military operations. “Not only does parachuting have a role in a combat situation, it also has a role in terms of reaching difficult areas to access for humanitarian disasters as well as combat. It allows us to project force very rapidly. So it’s as relevant today, in the context of potential Russian invasion, as it has ever been,” he noted.

The significance of these exercises is amplified by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Russian forces, having faced setbacks, are currently advancing in the Donbas region and inching towards Kharkiv. With artillery and airstrikes impacting numerous towns and villages, the prospect of a broader conflict looms large. As White House national security spokesperson John Kirby pointed out, “It is possible that Russia will make further advances in the coming weeks,” although efforts are underway to bolster Ukrainian defenses with new arms packages.

Estonia, a front-line NATO member state, is acutely aware of the Russian threat. Prime Minister Kaja Kallas recently advocated for increased NATO presence and direct training of Ukrainian forces on Ukrainian soil, arguing that such measures would not necessarily escalate the war. “There are countries who are training soldiers on the ground already,” Kallas said, emphasizing the necessity of bold actions to deter further Russian aggression.

The strategic value of airborne operations is not lost on the troops themselves. Corporal Thomas Skeld of the 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment expressed confidence in the effectiveness of air assault tactics: “Air assault gives us the opportunity to carry out operations in a fast and agile way. We are a fit lot and we can go in carrying on foot, carrying our kit, after we get on the ground.”

The historical context of British air assaults dates back to 1956 during the Suez Crisis, marking a significant deployment of paratroopers in combat operations.

France has also suggested that NATO might need to consider deploying troops in Ukraine, with President Emmanuel Macron stating that “if Russia wins in Ukraine, there will be no security in Europe.”

As NATO’s Exercise Steadfast Defender unfolds, it serves not only as a deterrent but also as a message of unity and preparedness. Bombardier Ryan Shaves of the Royal Horse Artillery encapsulated the collective resolve: “How will we do against Russia? I wouldn’t like to say whether we’d win or lose: but we are not on our own. We are a part of NATO. Our forces, together, are stronger than Russia’s.”
