The United States is poised to unveil an additional $275 million in military aid for Ukraine, marking the fourth installment since Congress passed a foreign aid bill last month. The latest package underscores the Biden administration’s commitment to providing sustained support to Kyiv as it grapples with Russian offensives in the Kharkiv region.
Two U.S. officials revealed the contents of the upcoming package, which includes high mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS) and highly sought 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds. This aid comes at a critical juncture, with Russia intensifying its efforts to exploit Ukrainian shortages in both manpower and weaponry.
The announcement aligns with a broader strategy articulated by U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during a recent meeting of about 50 defense leaders from Europe and beyond. At the meeting, Austin acknowledged Ukraine’s current “moment of challenge” and pledged to ensure a continuous flow of weapons. “We will keep weapons moving ‘week after week,'” he asserted, emphasizing the urgency of maintaining steady support to bolster Ukraine’s defenses.
The assistance package follows a period of relative delay, attributed to prolonged discussions in Congress. In the month since President Joe Biden signed the $95 billion foreign aid package—which allocated approximately $61 billion for Ukraine—the U.S. has already dispatched nearly $1.7 billion in weapons sourced from Pentagon reserves. Additionally, the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative has allocated $6 billion for long-term defense contracts, which may take several months or even years to materialize.
With this latest installment, the total U.S. military assistance to Ukraine since the onset of Russia’s invasion in February 2022 approaches $51 billion. This robust support underscores the U.S. strategic objective to counter Russian advances and mitigate the impact of relentless attacks on Ukraine’s power grid and civilian infrastructure.
