First Ukrainian Pilots Graduate F-16 Training in Arizona, Marking Significant Milestone

    Published on

In a pivotal development for Ukraine’s defense capabilities, the first group of Ukrainian pilots has successfully completed their training on F-16 fighter jets at the 162nd Air National Guard Base in Tucson, Arizona. This accomplishment signifies a crucial step in fortifying Ukraine’s air defense amid ongoing hostilities with Russia.

According to National Guard Air Force spokesperson Erin Hannigan, “Multiple Ukrainian pilots have graduated from their F-16 training course at the Air National Guard’s 162nd Wing in Tucson, Ariz.” The precise number of pilots or the exact date of their graduation remains undisclosed due to operational security concerns.

The training initiative commenced last October when the first tranche of four Ukrainian pilots arrived in Tucson. By late January, an additional four pilots had joined the program. The training, initially estimated to conclude earlier, was extended due to evolving requirements. As Lt. Gen. Michael A. Loh, director of the Air National Guard, explained, “We’re thinking more long-term, so some of the requirements on them has shifted, and so that has necessitated a little bit longer [timeframe].”

This accomplishment occurs within the larger framework of Western support for Ukraine, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the United States, Denmark, the Netherlands, and other NATO allies. As part of this coalition, Ukrainian pilots will now advance to Europe for additional training to further hone their skills on the F-16 platform.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon, originally developed by General Dynamics and now produced by Lockheed Martin, is renowned for its versatility and combat effectiveness. With a single Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 turbofan engine providing 130 kN of thrust with afterburner, the aircraft boasts impressive performance metrics, including a maximum speed of Mach 2.04 and a service ceiling of 15,200 meters.

Equipped with advanced avionics such as the AN/APG-83 active electronically scanned array radar, and an array of weapons ranging from AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles to AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missiles, the F-16 will significantly bolster Ukraine’s air capabilities. The aircraft also features modern fly-by-wire controls and an ALR-56M radar warning receiver, enhancing its survivability in contested airspaces.

The geopolitical implications of this milestone are substantial. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, addressing the dire need for bolstered air defenses, stated, “Russians are using 300 planes on the territory of Ukraine. We need at least 120, 130 planes to resist in the sky.” This perspective underscores the strategic importance of integrating F-16s into Ukraine’s arsenal, especially given Russia’s current air superiority.

Parallel training initiatives are ongoing in Europe, with Denmark and Romania establishing training facilities for Ukrainian pilots. The Dutch Ministry of Defense recently reported that ten Ukrainian military personnel completed F-16 maintenance training, further enhancing the operational readiness of Ukraine’s future F-16 fleet.

The transition from training to operational deployment is anticipated to be complex. As the Danish Ministry of Defense noted, the timeline for delivering F-16s is subject to several conditions that must be met before Ukraine can fully utilize these aircraft. However, it is expected that a preliminary contingent of six F-16s out of the approximately 45 promised by Western allies may be operational by July.
