Former President Donald Trump, during his address at the National Rifle Association (NRA)’s annual convention in Dallas, accepted the group’s endorsement and rallied gun owners to overturn President Joe Biden’s firearm regulations.
Flanked by thousands of NRA members, Trump sharpened his stance on gun rights. The NRA’s backing, its third endorsement of the Republican since 2016.
Trump took to the stage to decry Biden’s gun policies. “We’ve got to get gun owners to vote,” Trump declared. “I think you’re a rebellious bunch. But let’s be rebellious and vote this time.” His sentiments aimed to bolster voter turnout among gun rights supporters.
Trump also alleged that if his rival and incumbent US President Joe Biden “gets four more years they are coming for your guns, 100% certain. Crooked Joe has a 40-year-record of trying to rip firearms out of the hands of law-abiding citizens.”
Trump has consistently framed himself as the champion of gun owners, highlighting his actions during his first term, such as declaring firearm shops essential businesses amid the pandemic, allowing them to remain open.
He also repeated his pledge to fire the director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF, on Day One if he wins the presidency again. He reinforced his commitment to firearms freedom, stating, “In my second term, we will roll back every Biden attack on the Second Amendment. The attacks are coming fast and furious.”
In response to Trump’s remarks, the Biden campaign accused the former president of kowtowing to the gun lobby at the expense of public safety. Ammar Moussa, a spokesperson for the Biden campaign, criticized Trump, saying, “Tonight, Donald Trump confirmed that he will do exactly what the NRA tells him to do – even if it means more death, more shootings, and more suffering.”
Furthermore, during his speech, Trump also laced into independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., calling him “radical left” and “a disaster”.
Despite calls from many Democrats to impose more stringent controls on guns, Republicans, including Trump, have remained steadfast in their opposition to stricter gun laws, advocating instead for the preservation of Second Amendment rights.
