A Ukrainian missile strike has resulted in the deaths of two individuals near Simferopol, the main administrative centre of the Russia-annexed Crimea peninsula, according to Sergei Aksyonov, the head of the territory.In a post on Telegram, Aksyonov mentioned that a different missile hit an unoccupied building close to Alushta on Crimea’s Black Sea coast.
The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed that its air defences had intercepted three ATACMS missiles over Crimea, reported the TASS news agency. Additionally, the military purportedly destroyed three Ukrainian sea drones heading towards the peninsula. Despite these claims, Ukraine has not officially commented on the missile strikes.
According to Ukrainian military bloggers and various unofficial media, numerous targets throughout Crimea were hit by the missiles. The online news outlet Krymsky Veter shared a video depicting what it described as an explosion and subsequent fire in Alushta, with ambulances reportedly rushing to the scene.
Adding to the reports, RBK-Ukraine indicated that explosions had been recorded in three other locations, suggesting potential targets could include coastguard headquarters or intelligence centres. “News outlet RBK-Ukraine reported, without citing a source, that explosions had occurred in three other centres and said targets could have included headquarters for the coastguard or intelligence centres,” one report stated.
Russian bloggers from the region suggested that not all incoming missiles had been intercepted, despite the defensive measures taken by the Russian military.
Sergei Aksyonov, the leader of Russia-annexed Crimea, reported that two individuals were killed in a Ukrainian missile strike close to Simferopol, the peninsula’s primary administrative hub. Ukraine has not responded to the reported attack.
The missile attack on Crimea coincides with the ongoing military confrontations between Russia and Ukraine. Russian troops carried out a missile strike on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, leading to at least seven fatalities and numerous injuries.
Ukrainian and Russian forces are actively involved in tactical military maneuvers on different fronts. The Russian Ministry of Defence reported the capture of three Ukrainian sea drones along with the missile incidents in Crimea, underscoring the diverse array of challenges present in the area.
