James Cameron is one of the most successful directors in Hollywood history, with blockbuster hits like Titanic, Avatar, and Terminator under his belt. But behind the scenes, he has also had a tumultuous love life, marrying five times and divorcing four. His current wife, Suzy Amis, is a former actress who played a small but pivotal role in Titanic as Lizzy Calvert, Rose’s granddaughter. How did the director and the actress meet and fall in love? Here’s their story.
Cameron and Amis met on the set of Titanic in the mid-1990s, when he was directing the epic romance and she was playing the part of Lizzy, who listens to her grandmother’s story of her love affair with Jack Dawson. The two felt an instant attraction, but Cameron had a rule of not dating anyone he worked with. “As a matter of fact, Suzy and I, we were very attracted to each other when we first met,” he told The Guardian in 2017. “But I think about 10 seconds after we were done filming, well, you know.”
However, their relationship was complicated by the fact that Cameron was living with Linda Hamilton, the star of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, at the time. Hamilton later revealed that Cameron went off with Amis while they were taking a break from each other. “Then when he got together with her I changed my mind and he came back to me and we got married,” she told the Daily Mail in 2011. Their marriage only lasted eight months, and Cameron returned to Amis.
The pair tied the knot in 2000 and have been together ever since. They have three children together: Claire, Quinn, and Elizabeth. Amis retired from acting after marrying Cameron and became an activist for veganism, environmentalism, and education. She co-founded the MUSE School, a green school in California that promotes sustainability and plant-based diets. She also launched the One Meal a Day campaign, which encourages people to eat one plant-based meal a day to reduce their environmental impact.
Cameron and Amis also work together on several projects, such as the Avatar sequels, which are set to be released in 2024 and 2026. Cameron has praised his wife for being a strong independent woman who supports him in his endeavors. “Being attracted to strong independent women has the downside that they’re strong independent women — they inherently don’t need you,” he said with a laugh. “Fortunately, I’m married now to a strong independent woman who does believe she needs me.”
Amis has also expressed her gratitude for finding love with Cameron on the set of Titanic. “It totally changed my life,” she told Mom.com in 2012. She added that Gloria Stuart, who played the older Rose in Titanic, saw the sparks flying between them and acted as a matchmaker. “She was very much a matchmaker,” Amis said of Stuart.
The couple has been married for over two decades and seems to have found their happily ever after. They are proof that sometimes love can blossom from unlikely places — even from a movie about a doomed ship.
