UAW Workers Ready to Strike at GM, Ford, and Stellantis Over Pay and Benefits

    Published on

The United Auto Workers union (UAW) has voted to authorize a strike at the three major automakers in the US: General Motors (GM), Ford, and Stellantis. The union is demanding higher wages, better benefits, and more job security as the industry shifts to electric vehicles. The current contracts between the union and the automakers expire on September 14, and the union has rejected any extensions. A strike could cost the companies billions of dollars in lost production and disrupt the supply chain.

The United Auto Workers, the nation’s largest auto union, overwhelmingly approved a strike as contract negotiations continue with General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis. NBC News’ Jesse Kirsch reports on what to expect next.

The UAW represents about 150,000 workers at GM, Ford, and Stellantis, which was formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot earlier this year. The union members have voted to authorize a strike at the three automakers, with more than 95% of the votes in favor. The strike authorization does not mean that a strike will happen, but it gives the union bargaining power and shows the workers’ willingness to walk off the job if their demands are not met.

“Our members have made it clear that they are not willing to settle for anything less than a fair contract that recognizes their hard work and sacrifices,” said UAW President Ray Curry in a statement. “We are not going to let them take away what we have worked so hard for. We are ready to fight for our future.”

The union is seeking higher wages, better benefits, and more job security as the industry transitions to electric vehicles. The union wants to ensure that its members are not left behind or replaced by lower-paid workers as the automakers invest in new technologies and plants. The union also wants to protect its pension and health care plans, which are among the best in the country.

The automakers, on the other hand, are facing increasing competition from foreign rivals and new entrants in the electric vehicle market. They are also dealing with rising costs of raw materials, labor shortages, and supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the global chip shortage. The automakers are trying to balance their need to invest in innovation and growth with their need to maintain profitability and shareholder value.

“We are confident that we can reach an agreement that provides a strong future for our employees and our business,” said GM spokesperson David Barnas. “The industry is undergoing a historic transformation to electrification. This will require significant investments and changes in the way we operate. We hope to work with the UAW to find solutions that benefit both our employees and our customers,” said Ford spokesperson Kelli Felker.

The UAW has a strike fund of about $790 million, which can provide some financial support to its members in case of a strike. The fund pays $275 per week to each striking worker after the eighth day of a strike. “The strike fund is there to provide a backstop to workers in the event of a strike. It’s not something we want to use, but it’s something we have to be prepared for,” said UAW Secretary-Treasurer Tim O’Hara.

A strike could have a devastating impact on the automakers and the economy. According to a study by Anderson Economic Group, a 30-day strike could cost GM $7.5 billion, Ford $4.5 billion, and Stellantis $4 billion in lost revenue. A strike could also affect thousands of suppliers and dealers who depend on the automakers for their business.

The last time the UAW went on strike was in 2019, when it staged a 40-day walkout at GM that cost the company $3 billion in lost earnings. The strike ended with a four-year contract that gave workers higher wages, bonuses, profit-sharing, and health care benefits. The union also secured commitments from GM to invest $9 billion in US plants and create or retain 9,000 jobs.

The UAW hopes to achieve similar results with the other two automakers this year. However, the negotiations are expected to be tough and complex, as each company has its own challenges and opportunities in the changing automotive landscape. The union and the automakers have until September 14 to reach a deal or face a possible strike that could disrupt the industry and the economy.
