Adam Driver, the two-time Oscar nominee and former star of HBO’s Girls, returned to the Saturday Night Live stage over the weekend for his fourth time serving as host. He got musical for his fun, holiday-themed monologue, and also joked about his role as Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
“I’m so excited to be back! I have to say especially during this time of year,” Driver said, before launching into a song about how he loves Christmas. He also referenced his infamous scene in the 2015 film, where he killed his father, Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford. “Wokeness killed Han Solo,” he quipped, sparking laughter and applause from the audience.
The episode also featured a skit with Olivia Rodrigo, who was the musical guest for the night. The singer-songwriter, who rose to fame with her hit songs “drivers license” and “good 4 u”. She performed her songs “vampire” and “all-American bitch” from her sophomore album, GUTS. She also showed off her acting chops in a skit about luxury bags, where she played a character named Georgina.
Georgina, along with Driver and other SNL cast members, presented a variety of absurdly expensive and impractical bags, such as the “Big A** Bag”, the “Bag of Bags”, and the “Tiny A** Bag”. “Tiny A** Bag — so tiny it can only fit your secrets,” Rodrigo said, holding a minuscule purse.
Driver’s hosting gig was part of the remaining three originals of 2023. The always popular SNL holiday show will feature the Barbie duo of Kate McKinnon and Billie Eilish on December 16.
Driver became well-known through his role on HBO’s Girls, portraying a character with his own name from 2012 to 2017. Subsequently, he achieved great success in the film industry, notably as Kylo Ren in three Star Wars films, as well as in prominent roles in movies such as House of Gucci (alongside Lady Gaga), The Last Duel, and the upcoming Ferrari in 2023.His Oscar nominations were for his performances in Marriage Story (2019), where he portrayed Charlie, a man going through a tumultuous divorce from his wife, Nicole (played by Scarlett Johansson), and in BlacKkKlansman (2018), where he played Detective Philip “Flip” Zimmerman.
Driver’s return to SNL was met with excitement from fans and critics alike. His performance, along with Rodrigo’s musical guest appearance, made for an entertaining and memorable episode.
