Kanye West, the billionaire clothing designer and one of the world’s best-selling music artists, has once again found himself at the center of controversy. This time, it’s not for his outspoken views or his conduct on social media, but for his choice of attire during the introduction to his forthcoming joint project with Ty Dolla $ign, titled “Vultures”.
At the “Vultures” listening party, West was seen wearing a black hood resembling the Ku Klux Klan. The pointed shape and the focus on covering the face parallel the Ku Klux Klan’s attire, sparking criticism and controversy.
Adding to the controversy, West’s 10-year-old daughter, North West, was seen modeling a similar hood. This has led to more backlash, with people online expressing worries about the potential impact on North’s future. Some fans expressed concerns for North’s safety, fearing that she might face backlash for the rest of her life due to this picture being on the internet forever.
West’s choice of attire is not the only aspect of the listening party that has drawn criticism. Footage from the event also revealed some of the lyrics from his upcoming album, which have been deemed as antisemitic.
This isn’t the initial instance of West being accused of making antisemitic remarks. In 2022, he faced widespread condemnation and lost numerous sponsors and partnerships, including collaborations with Adidas, Gap, and Balenciaga, due to a string of antisemitic statements.
Despite the controversies, West’s impact on the music and fashion industries remains undeniable. With over 160 million records sold, West has won 24 Grammy Awards and received 75 nominations, ranking joint tenth-most of all time. He also holds the joint-most Grammy awards of any rapper, tied with Jay-Z. His partnerships with Nike, Louis Vuitton, Gap, and A.P.C. for clothing and footwear, as well as his Yeezy collaboration with Adidas, have solidified his position as a significant figure in the fashion industry.
