Acclaimed actor Willem Dafoe has been awarded the first star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for the year 2024, a significant accolade marking his extensive contributions to the film industry. Surrounded by friends, fans, and esteemed colleagues, Dafoe was honored with the 2,768th star at the celebratory ceremony on Monday afternoon.
Dafoe, known for his captivating performances in over 150 films, has earned four Academy Award nominations and widespread acclaim for his work in cinema. His iconic roles in movies such as “The Boondock Saints,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “Platoon,” “Shadow of the Vampire,” “The Florida Project,” and “At Eternity’s Gate” have cemented his legacy in Hollywood.
During the ceremony, Dafoe was praised by fellow actors Patricia Arquette and Pedro Pascal, who both delivered heartfelt speeches highlighting his influence and unique presence in the industry. Arquette, who directed Dafoe in her directorial debut “Gonzo Girl,” described him as someone who “exceeds your hopes when you work with him, when you get to meet him.” She also noted that his ability to elevate material makes him a sought-after collaborator among the best actors and directors.
Pascal shared a personal anecdote from his childhood, recalling the profound impact Dafoe’s performance in “Platoon” had on him, to the point of tears, and how it solidified his own aspirations to pursue acting. He lauded Dafoe as a rebel and original, redefining those concepts with his generosity, integrity, kindness, and fun.
In addition to his star, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce proclaimed January 8 as William Dafoe Day in Hollywood. Dafoe’s star can be found at the prestigious location of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street. The actor expressed his joy and humility during the ceremony, saying, “I can’t stop smiling. I feel like a real idiot, but this is wonderful.”
The Appleton, Wisconsin native reflected on his journey from the Midwest to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, acknowledging other notable individuals from his hometown who have shared this honor. He credited his wife, director Giada Colagrande, for instilling in him a sense of gratitude and teaching him the value of his fortune, as he graciously thanked her and his colleagues for their support.
Dafoe’s recent project, “Poor Things,” also garnered attention, having won the 2024 Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy — the previous night. This recognition alongside the Walk of Fame star has indeed started his year on a high note. With the ever-humble goal of wanting to “make good movies and work with good people,” Dafoe continues to remain engaged and passionate about his craft, an inspiration for the present and future generations of actors.
