Judd Apatow’s Outcry Over Oscars”Barbie’ Screenplay Classification as Adapted

    Published on

In the vibrant and often heated sphere of Hollywood accolades, one might not expect the categorization of a screenplay to kindle such impassioned debate. Yet, here we are, with acclaimed filmmaker Judd Apatow igniting controversy by challenging the decision of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to label Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” screenplay as adapted rather than original.

The crux of the conflict lies in the Oscars’ rules that dictate the classification of screenplays. The Academy has determined that “Barbie,” despite its unique narrative and creative interpretation, falls under the adapted category because its characters, the iconic dolls Barbie and Ken, are pre-existing properties of the toy company Mattel. This decision has been met with vocal opposition from Apatow who took to social media to declare,“It’s insulting to the writers to say they were working off of existing material. There was no existing material or story. There was a clear box.”

Apatow’s criticism highlights a broader conversation about the nature of storytelling and the distinction between original and adapted works. The Oscars have previously placed films such as “Toy Story 3,”“Borat 2,”“Before Sunset,” and “Before Midnight” in the adapted screenplay category due to their use of pre-existing characters, even though they told new stories.

The contention over “Barbie” is not isolated. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) differs in its interpretation, having designated the screenplay as an original work. It will be regarded as such at the upcoming WGA Awards. This discrepancy has raised questions about the Academy’s criteria and whether the current approach adequately acknowledges the creative efforts of writers crafting new tales around established characters.

Greta Gerwig is no stranger to Oscar nominations, having been recognized for her work on “Lady Bird” and “Little Women,” which were deemed original and adapted, respectively. However, with the classification of “Barbie,” eligible voting members of the Academy’s branch will only be able to consider Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach’s script for an adapted screenplay nomination.

The debate extends beyond a mere trophy race. It touches on the essence of what constitutes originality in the film industry. Films like “Joker” and the “Glass Onion,” a sequel to “Knives Out,” have faced similar categorization challenges, suggesting a pattern in the Academy’s decision-making process that prioritizes the presence of pre-existing characters over the narrative’s origins.

Apatow’s dispute with the Academy’s classification of “Barbie” delves into the heart of cinematic storytelling and the recognition of creative endeavors. While adapted screenplays are not inherently less valuable than originals, there is a distinctive skill in concocting a brand-new narrative compared to adapting an existing one for the silver screen. In the case of “Barbie,” which boldly presents a fresh storyline diverging from any prior Barbie adventures, Apatow, and likely others in the industry, see the adapted label as a disservice to the screenwriters’ inventive contributions.

As the conversation unfolds and the Academy prepares for official Oscar nomination voting, the classification of “Barbie” remains a contentious topic, one that may prompt reconsideration of the rules that define the very creations that captivate audiences worldwide.
