Texas Governor Greg Abbott Sparks Outrage with Comments on Shooting Migrants

    Published on

Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s remark that his state is not shooting migrants because “the Biden administration would charge us with murder” has ignited a firestorm of controversy. Abbott’s comments, made during an appearance on The Dana Loesch Show, underscored the lengths to which Texas has gone to enforce border security while also drawing criticism for the way he chose to express the state’s limitations in dealing with undocumented migrants.

In a candid exchange with Loesch, Abbott explained the various measures his administration has taken to curb illegal immigration, including building barriers and passing legislation that criminalizes illegal border crossings. Abbott stated, “We are deploying every tool and strategy that we possibly can. The only thing that we’re not doing is we’re not shooting people who come across the border because, of course, the Biden administration would charge us with murder.”

This statement quickly became a lightning rod for criticism as it was seen as an extreme reflection of the immigration debate. The governor’s comment was resurfaced by Heartland Signal and spread widely, drawing attention to the ongoing clash between the state of Texas and the Biden administration over immigration policies.

The context of Abbott’s remarks is critical, as they come amid legal battles between Texas and the federal government. Earlier in the month, the Biden administration sued Texas over a law signed by Abbott that gives local law enforcement the authority to arrest migrants and permits judges to order deportations, arguing that it contravenes federal authority over immigration enforcement.

Moreover, Abbott’s commentary is situated within a broader conversation that includes past statements by former President Donald Trump, who reportedly suggested shooting migrants in the legs and whose immigration adviser, Stephen Miller, once proposed using drones against migrant boats. These instances highlight a hardline approach to immigration enforcement that raises ethical and legal concerns.

Abbott’s rhetoric also comes on the heels of his labeling of victims of a mass shooting in Cleveland, Texas, as “illegal immigrants,” which has been criticized as dehumanizing. This description was rebuked by immigration advocates and lawmakers, particularly after it was revealed that at least one of the victims might have been in the United States legally.

Renae Eze, a spokesperson for Abbott, subsequently issued a statement expressing regret if the initial information about the victims’ legal status was incorrect and detracted from the pursuit of justice. “Any loss of life is a tragedy, and our hearts go out to the families who have lost a loved one,” Eze noted, pivoting attention back to the tragic loss of life and the ongoing manhunt for the suspect.
