McGuire, with over 800 successful jumps to his name, was at 10,500 feet when he exited the aircraft with his camera equipment, forgetting the most crucial piece of gear—a parachute. Nancy Fayard, wife of the parachute center owner Paul Fayard, expressed the disbelief of those involved, stating, “No one was aware that he got on the plane without a parachute. Of course no one knew or they would have stopped him.”
The skydiving community was stunned by the loss, as McGuire was not a novice but a seasoned enthusiast, aiming to build a career as a skydiving photographer. His passion for capturing the thrill of freefall was evident, but this ambition tragically led to his untimely death. After the incident, a thorough investigation ensued. Although initial concerns arose, suicide was swiftly ruled out, and it was determined that the tragedy was a result of a pure accident—a simple but devastating oversight. Captain Ralph Brown, who reviewed the tape, described the haunting moment when McGuire reached for his parachute only to find it absent. FAA inspector Walter Rigsbee cited a critical regulation, No. 105, which underscores the pilot’s responsibility to check that all jumpers have their parachutes before they can exit the plane. McGuire’s body was later found some distance from the airfield from which he had taken off.
