Former President Donald Trump is reportedly on the hunt for a new legal team after a federal jury delivered a hefty $83.3 million verdict against him in the defamation case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll. Trump announced his intentions to seek fresh legal representation in a post on Truth Social following the decision, painting his ongoing legal battles as “one of the most ridiculous and unfair Witch Hunts our Country has ever seen.”
“I am in the process, along with my team, of interviewing various law firms to represent me in an Appeal of one of the most ridiculous and unfair Witch Hunts our Country has ever seen – The defamation Sham presided over by a Clinton appointed, highly partisan, Trump Hating Judge, Lewis Kaplan, who was, together with certain other Radical Left Democrat Judges, one of the most partisan and out of control activists that I have ever appeared before,” Trump’s Tuesday night post began.
The case hinges on accusations from Carroll, who alleges Trump sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan department store dressing room in the mid-1990s and later defamed her by publicly denying her claim. In a previous verdict last year, a different jury awarded Carroll $5 million after finding Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation—a decision he is also appealing.
In a post-verdict statement, Carroll’s attorney Roberta Kaplan said, “Today’s verdict proves that the law applies to everyone in our country, even the rich, even the famous, even former presidents.” Kaplan highlighted Carroll’s bravery and the jury’s stand for the rule of law.
Observers like MSNBC host Joe Scarborough ridiculed Habba’s preparedness, suggesting Trump had “83.3 million reasons” to seek out new counsel.
In a stark example of the high stakes at play, Carroll suggested that she intends to use the funds in a manner Trump would dislike, possibly setting up a “fund for the women who have been sexually assaulted by Donald Trump.”
As the former president faces this significant legal defeat and its implications for his political future, the jury’s decision serves as a stark reminder that, regardless of status, individuals can be held accountable through the judicial system. With Trump’s pledge to appeal and the search for a new legal team underway, the saga is far from over. Meanwhile, Carroll’s legal team expresses confidence in the eventual collection of the damages awarded, regardless of Trump’s next moves.
