A U.S. Navy chief petty officer, Bryce Pedicini, has been charged with espionage for allegedly passing classified documents to a foreign government employee, as per a charge sheet obtained by various news outlets. Stationed aboard the USS Higgins, a Japan-based guided-missile destroyer, Pedicini faces accusations of compromising national defense information on multiple occasions spanning from November 2022 through February 2023.
Pedicini’s alleged espionage activities took place in Hampton Roads, Virginia, where he reportedly provided documents entitled “Article 1112” and its subsequent additions, as well as “Article 1223” and updates, to a foreign employee. Details of the specific documents and the involved foreign nation remain undisclosed. However, the charge sheet indicates that Pedicini was aware that the information could potentially harm the United States and benefit a foreign power.
In a separate incident in May 2023, Pedicini attempted to share photographs, which included images of a computer screen with secret information, while in Yokosuka, Japan. This act was flagged as an attempt to communicate information relating to national defense. The photos depicted a computer connected to the military’s classified network, and Pedicini was purportedly aware of the sensitive nature of this information.
The U.S. Naval Surface Force confirmed the ongoing investigation, stating, “The incident remains under investigation and legal proceedings continue,” as spoken by Cmdr. Arlo Abrahamson, a spokesperson for the force.
Pedicini, who enlisted in the Navy in 2009 and was promoted to chief in 2022, was arrested following the Japan incident and has been in pre-trial confinement since May 19. He faced a general court-martial this week, with the trial expected to clarify the severity of the breaches and the potential ramifications.
Beyond espionage and communicating defense information, the charges against Pedicini include failing to report foreign contacts and solicitation of classified information, as well as taking a personal device into a secure space and the unauthorized transportation of classified materials.
These allegations are part of a broader context of U.S. military personnel being implicated in espionage activities. Other recent cases include the sentencing of Petty Officer Wenheng Zhao for accepting bribes in exchange for military information and the arrest of soldier Jinchao Wei for sharing military exercise manuals.
