At a small Dairy Queen in Campton, Kentucky, a chilling incident allegedly forced several employees to consume ice cream contaminated with a cleaning solution, leading to hospital visits and an uproar among parents and community members. The Wolfe County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the claims that have left many outraged and concerned for the safety of young workers in food service environments.
Angela Patton, the mother of one of the employees, stated, “Oh, I was livid. I was livid,” after learning that her 17-year-old daughter was among those reportedly coerced by the restaurant’s manager into eating the tainted ice cream. During a mandatory staff meeting, employees were told, “They were told by the manager that whether or not they liked chocolate ice cream, they were going to eat it today,” according to Patton’s account. These remarks, shared with WKYT, highlighted the gravity of the situation where about eight employees, primarily minors, felt compelled to comply with the manager’s demands.
Some of those who consumed the ice cream reported a burning sensation upon swallowing, a symptom consistent with ingestion of corrosive substances. Such chemicals pose serious health risks, potentially causing severe burns or perforations to the esophagus and stomach, which can be life-threatening, as stated by the European Commission’s public health website.
The urgency of the matter escalated when several of the affected employees required emergency medical treatment. The alleged punitive measure for not cleaning the ice cream machine properly, as described by Patton, led to immediate repercussions, with some of the young workers quitting their jobs.
Deputy Elijah Banks from the Wolfe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the ongoing investigation, noting the sensitivity due to the involvement of juveniles. “We still have multiple people coming in to give statements, but as of now, it’s still under investigation,” Deputy Banks conveyed. While no charges have been filed at this stage, the community eagerly awaits answers and justice.
Steve Caudill, the franchise owner, has responded to the allegations by ensuring that an internal investigation was promptly initiated and that the manager in question is no longer employed at the establishment. “The safety of our fans and crew members is our top priority,” Caudill stated. The restaurant is also cooperating with law enforcement authorities.
This alarming incident has drawn attention to the broader risks of workplace safety and the well-being of minor employees. As Angela Patton seeks legal counsel, stating, “What they’ve done is not right,” there is a growing call for accountability and for measures to be put in place to prevent any similar occurrences in the future.
