Uvalde Police Chief Resigns Amid Scrutiny Over Department’s Response to School Shooting

    Published on

In a move that has punctuated months of investigation and debate over law enforcement’s response to the tragic Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, Police Chief Daniel Rodriguez has announced his resignation effective April 6. His departure follows a report that cleared his department of wrongdoing but failed to quell public anger and grief.

“After much contemplation and consideration, I believe it is time for me to embark on a new chapter in my career,” Rodriguez stated. The announcement arrives less than a week after an independent report, commissioned by the Uvalde City Council, concluded that Uvalde police officers present during the May 24, 2022, massacre did not violate policy or commit serious acts of misconduct.

This report stands in stark contrast to an earlier assessment by the U.S. Justice Department, which identified a lack of leadership and a failure to follow police protocol as significant issues in the law enforcement response, where officers waited 77 minutes to confront the gunman, despite ongoing calls indicating children were still alive and in danger.

The independent report, crafted by investigator Jesse Prado, pointed to communication breakdowns, unruly crowds at the scene, and lack of access to keys as factors in the police response. It absolved the city’s police force from wrongdoing, a conclusion that has done little to pacify the bereaved community.

Kimberly Mata-Rubio, who lost her 10-year-old daughter, Alexandria “Lexi” Rubio, said at that meeting: “How do all of you live with yourselves? “How do you go to bed at night and then wake up every day? Shame on you all. You said they did it in good faith? You call that good faith? They stood there for 77 minutes and waited after they got call after call that kids were still alive in there,” she continued. “All this is it’s a pact. It’s a brothers’ pact. You protect your own.”

Rodriguez, having led the Uvalde police since 2018, was away on vacation when the shooting occurred. He maintained that his decision to step down was not due to external pressure but was instead “the best for me and my family.”

As the city grapples with the aftermath, Assistant Chief of Police Homer Delgado is set to become the interim chief while officials seek a permanent replacement. Uvalde Mayor Cody Smith released the following statement after Uvalde Chief of Police Daniel Rodriguez announced his resignation: “The City of Uvalde is grateful to Chief Rodriguez for his 26 years of service to our community and we wish him the best as he pursues new career opportunities. Assistant Chief of Police Homer Delgado will be named Interim Chief of Police, as the City Manager and I undertake the search for a full-time replacement in consultation with the City Council. Nothing is more important than the safety of our community, and we look forward to working together to identify the best candidate to serve the people of Uvalde.”
