Putin Intensifies Crackdown: Orders FSB to Hunt and Punish Russian ‘Traitors’ Without Limit

    Published on

In a move that signals an intensifying crackdown against dissent within Russia, President Vladimir Putin has issued a stark directive to the Federal Security Service (FSB) to aggressively hunt down and punish those deemed as ‘traitors’ to the motherland. The decree, which carries an unsettling reminder of Russia’s darker chapters of state security operations, instructs the FSB to identify and penalize these individuals “without a statute of limitations, wherever they are.”

Addressing the FSB board, Putin, a former KGB officer, evoked historical precedents for such actions, stating, “When I said about these traitors, I ask you, as it has always happened in our history, to not forget who they are, to identify them name by name.” His words, delivered with an ominous determination, underscore the Kremlin’s stance towards any perceived betrayal amidst the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Putin added that he expected the FSB and other security services to “significantly increase antiterror work in all directions,” emphasizing the strength and danger of the adversary.

The Russian president’s comments come in the wake of Ukrainian operations that have targeted Russian energy facilities and other significant infrastructure, which Putin labeled as “terrorism.” Such actions by Ukraine have reportedly been a thorn in the side of the Russian military campaign, leading to heightened security measures and a proposed establishment of a ‘buffer’ zone along the Russia-Ukraine border to prevent further incursions.

Furthermore, the clampdown appears to reach beyond conventional acts of espionage or direct military opposition. Anti-Putin protesters have also been branded as ‘traitors,’ as indicated by a top Kremlin official last week. This widening net over what constitutes betrayal might signal a more extensive suppression of dissent within Russia, potentially affecting those who oppose the Kremlin’s policies or actions.

The FSB, notorious for its heavy-handed tactics, has been implicated in several controversial incidents, including apartment bombings in 1999 that were suspected to be the agency’s doing and assassination attempts on dissenting figures such as Alexei Navalny and Sergei Skripal using the Novichok chemical weapon. Putin’s remarks present a chilling reminder of the agency’s reach and its potential to act on his new mandate with lethal effectiveness.

In the backdrop of these pronouncements, Ukrainian militia groups, including the Russian Volunteer Corps, the Freedom of Russia Legion, and the Siberian Battalion, have been conducting cross-border raids, adding to the sense of urgency for the FSB to step up its operations. The Kremlin has pointed the finger at the Ukrainian government, accusing it of orchestrating these raids, an allegation Kyiv has denied. Nonetheless, the disturbances these groups have caused have led to calls from the likes of the Freedom of Russia Legion for the evacuation of civilians from affected Russian regions, citing the intensification of military-targeted strikes.
