In a corporate shuffle that signals a fresh direction for Boeing, the aerospace giant has appointed Stephanie Pope as the new CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA). A third-generation Boeing employee with almost three decades at the company, Pope takes the helm at a particularly tumultuous time, inheriting both the legacy and the challenges that come with leading one of the world’s largest aerospace manufacturers.
Pope’s promotion is part of a broader leadership shakeup announced by Boeing’s outgoing President and CEO, Dave Calhoun, who is set to step down at the end of 2024. In the wake of Calhoun’s departure announcement, Stephanie Pope has been named as the successor to Stan Deal, transitioning into her role with immediate effect.
Having served in various senior roles across the company, including as CFO of Boeing’s defense, space, and security division and CEO of Boeing Global Services, Pope’s tenure has been marked by consistent profit performance and a wealth of experience in diverse business functions. Her most recent post before this ascension was as Boeing’s first Chief Operating Officer since January of this year, overseeing supply chain, quality, manufacturing, and engineering.
Her appointment comes at a critical juncture for Boeing, which has faced intense scrutiny over its safety practices following the crashes of two 737 MAX planes in 2018 and 2019 and, more recently, an incident involving an Alaska Airlines aircraft. Calhoun characterized the Alaska Airlines event as a “watershed moment,” emphasizing that the company must demonstrate “complete transparency” and an unwavering commitment to safety and quality.
Pope’s leadership qualities have been highlighted by Calhoun, who noted in his memo to staff, “Stephanie knows our company inside and out and has a proven track record of superb leadership, including an innate talent for listening and responding to our people.” He added, “She is the perfect person to take on the leadership of our commercial airplanes business.”
In addition to her financial acumen and operational oversight, Pope has been a champion of gender diversity within Boeing. She is the executive sponsor of the Women Inspiring Leadership business resource group, underlining her commitment to fostering an inclusive corporate culture.
With Boeing Commercial Airplanes, the sector responsible for crafting popular aircraft such as the 777, 787 Dreamliner, and the 737 family, Pope’s vision for the future is paramount. She will oversee an enterprise that is based in Seattle, boasting factories in Renton and Everett, Washington, and a global workforce of 60,000. The new CEO is undoubtedly expected to chart a course that not only addresses Boeing’s immediate challenges but also sets a sustainable trajectory for innovation and growth in the aviation industry.
