The life of William “Billy” Bretherton, better known as Billy the Exterminator, reads like a script for an unconventional hero’s journey. Swapping his Air Force uniform for his distinctive Goth-like pest control garb, Bretherton’s leap from law enforcement aspirations to becoming an entomology expert and TV personality is as dramatic as it is unique.
Bretherton’s career took an unexpected turn after joining the Air Force at age 19 with an eye on law enforcement. It was his military entrance examination that hinted at a different path, revealing an aptitude for biology that eventually led him to study both biology and entomology. His first foray into pest control began while stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in North Las Vegas, Nevada, where his newly discovered skills would lay the groundwork for his future in extermination.
The path from military service to pest control is not an obvious one, and certainly, Bretherton’s specific set of skills seemed to destine him for a unique niche. He capitalized on this niche and, with his unusual fashion style of black garments studded with silver jewelry, spikes, and leather tough enough to block bites and stings, he became a reality TV icon. His flair for the dramatic, coupled with his knowledge and experience, caught the eye of producers. As Bretherton recalls, “Back in 2004 Pilgrim Films contacted us and wanted to shoot a pilot for Discovery Channel (that was a) reality pest control show”.
The success of his appearance on “Dirty Jobs” led to his own series, initially titled “The Exterminators” in its 2009 debut season on A&E. By the second season, it was aptly renamed “Billy the Exterminator,” reflecting the show’s focus on its charismatic lead.
Bretherton’s extermination method is not what one might expect. He has always been a proponent of humane and natural methods of control, preferring to relocate animals where possible. This approach, in tandem with his larger-than-life screen persona and deep knowledge of pests, has garnered a dedicated viewership.
While “Billy the Exterminator” wrapped up after six seasons due to personal family issues that saw Bretherton leave Vexcon and move to Illinois, the series has left a lasting impression on fans. It returned briefly in 2017 as “Billy Goes North,” airing in Canada and then as the seventh season in the United States.
