In February, 25-Year-Old’s Final Letter Inspires Global Reflection on Life and Cancer

In a touching and deeply resonant final letter shared posthumously, 25-year-old Daniella Thackray inspired a wave of emotional responses from people worldwide as she announced her death from bile duct cancer and encouraged others to cherish the little things in life. The letter, which has since gone viral, was shared by her family on social media platforms LinkedIn and Facebook on February 23, following her untimely passing.

Daniella, who was described as an enthusiastic and cheerful person, worked as a people administrator for an advertising agency in Leeds, England. Her life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer that forms in the bile ducts, in July 2023. Despite the fact that her life was altered, Daniella chose to focus on the love for her job, her fiancé, her family, friends, her dog Leo, and the life she was building.

Her final words underscored her powerful message: “We can’t control what happens to us, (but) we can control how we react. You should enjoy the little things in life and cherish every moment! Romanticise your life! Do whatever makes you happy and don’t let anyone take the joy of life away from you.”

Her funeral took place on March 18. In closing the letter, she left a message for her fiancé: “Go and live your life to the fullest now, you deserve it.”

Bile duct cancer, which presents symptoms like jaundice, clay-colored stool, nausea, and unexplained weight loss, is challenging to treat because the cancer is typically detected after it has already spread.

The cause of it remains unknown to experts, while it can have risk factors like bile duct stones, cirrhosis of the liver, or inflammatory bowel disease, Daniella stressed that “not all cancers are caused by lifestyle choices, in some cases it’s genetics or unfortunately it just happens.”

Her final letter not only shares her personal journey and reflections but also carries a plea for increased research into this “horrid cruel disease.” The American Cancer Society notes a mere 2% to 3% five-year survival rate for bile duct cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body. Her manager at 26 Agency, Liz Reynolds, described Daniella as the “most enthusiastic and cheerful person,” and the company is fundraising for St Gemma’s hospice in Leeds in her memory.

Daniella’s message resonated with individuals. One commenter expressed, “I don’t know, and will never have the opportunity to meet Daniella, but she has forever changed my view of life. She was wise beyond her years.” Another agreed, “A heartfelt, powerful message from an unknown, courageous angel, Daniella, whose words will resonate each and every day, forever.”
