Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) has unleashed a scathing critique of the Supreme Court, suggesting it move its operations to the Republican National Committee (RNC) headquarters due to its perceived partisanship in the case involving former President Donald Trump’s claim to presidential immunity.
During an appearance on MSNBC’s “The ReidOut,” Raskin did not mince words when discussing the recent Supreme Court hearings. Trump’s legal representative, D. John Sauer, had argued that a president could order the assassination of a political rival or orchestrate a military coup and still be covered by presidential immunity.
“They’re politicians who are not even subject to popular election, unlike me,” Raskin said. “They should move the Supreme Court over to the RNC headquarters because they’re acting like a bunch of partisan operatives.”
Justice Sonia Sotomayor asked Sauer if “fundamentally evil” actions, such as having the military get rid of a political foe, would be protected from criminal prosecution. The attorney, who heard various scenarios from judges serving on the nation’s highest court, said most of the scenarios could fall under the protection. “That well could be an official act,” Sauer said.
Raskin blasted Justice Samuel Alito for a comment that suggested holding a president criminally accountable could encourage more violent attempts to hold onto power. Raskin characterized Alito’s remark as buying “completely into Donald Trump’s narcissistic criminal worldview.”
“The most astonishing thing for me today was Justice Alito’s question,” Raskin stated. “He actually asked whether holding the president criminally accountable for actual crimes committed — whether murder or coup or you name it — whether holding them accountable would actually encourage them to stage more violent coups to stay in office to avoid prosecution.”
Raskin emphasized the gravity of the situation, labeling the line of thinking as “masochistic capitulationism to Donald Trump’s authoritarianism.” He underscored the long-held American principle that no one is above the law, including the president, and challenged the Supreme Court’s seemingly new stance that holding Trump accountable could provoke him to escalate his efforts to subvert the government.
