San Diego Woman Receives 12-Year Sentence for Fentanyl-Related Death

    Published on

A San Diego woman, Megan Rae Bowman, was sentenced to nearly 12 years in prison for her role in a fentanyl transaction that led to a man’s death. This sentencing marks another poignant chapter in the national dialogue about accountability and the profound consequences of fentanyl distribution.

Bowman, 25, faced the legal repercussions of her actions in federal court after admitting to selling Michael Raymond Kuch a gram of the powerful synthetic opioid. The transaction, finalized at a motel in Old Town San Diego on December 3, 2022, ended tragically when Kuch was found deceased from an overdose two days later.

The victim, a 35-year-old father known affectionately among his San Diego circle as “Boston Mike,” leaves behind a family and a young son.

U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath expressed the gravity of Bowman’s actions, stating, “Dealers are well aware the fentanyl they are selling is a ticking time bomb with a blast radius inflicting injury across our communities. Today our system held another dealer accountable for her role in spreading this deadly poison.”

The case against Bowman was not only about justice for the victim but also served as a stern warning to others involved in the narcotics trade. Christopher A. Davis, Acting Special Agent in Charge for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Diego, saying, “The investigation of this case was one of detailed and thorough work by HSI’s FAST team and partnered agencies. The defendant now must live with knowing she is responsible for taking a life while sitting in prison. This should be a lesson to drug dealers that prison may be your future.”

San Diego County law enforcement has reiterated its commitment to combat the fentanyl crisis. Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Katra of the Narcotics and Gang Division stated, “We are dedicated to identifying and holding accountable those responsible for supplying the deadly Fentanyl. We will continue to collaborate with our Federal, State, local and legislative partners to accomplish this mission.”

Bowman’s case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Adam Gordon and Shivanjali Sewak. The Department of Homeland Security, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and San Diego Imperial Valley High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (SDI HIDTA) collaborated in the investigation.

It happens that there is a similar case, Federal prosecutors announced on Thursday that charges have been filed against a 63-year-old man for distributing fentanyl, which resulted in the fatal overdoses of two individuals in North Park.

According to court documents, Scott Anthony Sargent is alleged to have supplied fentanyl that resulted in the deaths of two individuals, identified as Z.W. and M.L., on November 10, 2022.

Sargent faces charges of distributing fentanyl leading to death and conspiring to distribute fentanyl and methamphetamine. During his initial court appearance on Thursday in San Diego federal court, he was remanded into custody without bond.
