On a debate stage meant for Democratic contenders, the absence of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis became the unspoken focal point of the event. Fani Willis, noted for spearheading the election interference case against former President Trump, chose to skip the first Democratic Party primary debate, leaving her challenger, Christian Wise Smith, to face an empty podium.
Willis’ decision to not attend the debate was reportedly due to her co-hosting the second annual “Self Care Fair” with Atlanta City Councilwoman Andrea Boone in honor of Crime Victims’ Rights Week. Additionally, her ongoing focus on the prosecution of Trump was cited as a reason for her absence.
“That issue is important to us in Fulton County and a lot of people across the country,” Smith articulated from the stage, emphasizing the community’s stake in the matter. He criticized Willis not for the high-profile prosecution itself but for the manner in which it was handled, particularly the hiring of a romantic partner, Nathan Wade, for the case. “When you pay one attorney nearly $1 million to handle one case, that leaves the rest of us vulnerable. That hurts everyone in Fulton County,” Smith asserted.
Despite the controversy and the optics of her debate absence, local polling suggests Willis maintains strong leads over Smith. Nevertheless, the empty podium served as a silent yet powerful symbol, allowing Smith to address issues of professionalism and resource allocation within the DA’s office. He underscored his commitment to the people of Fulton County and his intent to approach the office differently, with an emphasis on local residents.
The implications of the no-show extend beyond the local political arena. Willis and Wade both admitted to their affair but insisted their relationship only became official in 2022, after charges were brought against defendants in the Trump case. This assertion has been met with skepticism, as witnesses alleged the relationship began earlier. Judge Scott McAfee ruled last month that either Willis step aside from the case or Wade be fired, with Wade eventually resigning.
Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee said last month that there was a “significant appearance of impropriety that infects the current structure of the prosecution team,” but did not find an “actual conflict of interest in this case through her personal relationship and recurring travels with her lead prosecutor.”
