Former President Trump maintains a lead over President Biden in a hypothetical match-up, a new survey found. The CNN survey conducted by SSRS reveals that Trump commands 49 percent of the support among registered voters, while Biden trails with 43 percent. This margin echoes previous CNN surveys from January and last fall, which showed Trump with a steady 49 percent support compared to Biden’s 45 percent.
Despite this lead, both Trump and Biden are viewed unfavorably by the majority of voters. In fact, 58 percent of voters hold an unfavorable view of Biden, while 55 percent view Trump unfavorably. Even more telling is that 17 percent of voters harbor unfavorable views of both candidates.
Digging deeper into the numbers, 55 percent of respondents consider Trump’s presidency a success, surpassing the 39 percent who view Biden’s tenure positively. These perceptions are especially stark among party lines, with 92 percent of Republicans viewing Trump’s presidency as successful, compared to 73 percent of Democrats who feel the same about Biden’s presidency.
Trump, known for his avid use of social media platforms, did not hesitate to comment on the survey results. On Truth Social, he exclaimed, “GOOD POLL NUMBERS, FROM CNN OF ALL PLACES, AGAINST THE WORST PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES (BY FAR!).”
The issue of the economy appears to be a deciding factor for many voters, as 65 percent of registered voters consider it extremely important to their vote for president. Trump seems to have a significant advantage in this area, with those who prioritize the economy as a crucial issue favoring him over Biden with a striking 62 percent to 30 percent margin.
It is not just the economy that is influencing voter sentiment. A significant portion of Americans, 70 percent, perceive the U.S. economic conditions to be poor. Approximately 41 percent believe that a change in political leadership could more effectively change their impression of the economy than other factors like a lower inflation rate or a rise in the stock market.
The CNN poll, which included 1,212 respondents and 967 registered voters, was conducted from April 18-23 and has a margin of sampling error of 3.4 percentage points.
Americans seem to desire a focus on domestic rather than foreign affairs, 59% of voters say this is a time in world affairs that enables the U.S. to focus primarily on domestic issues, rather than spend more on military and foreign affairs (Democrats: 58%; Republicans: 57%; Independents: 63%).
