The escalating standoff between NATO and Russia has reached a new peak as Russian propagandist Dmitry Kiselyov, known for his close ties with President Vladimir Putin, issued a chilling threat on state television. He declared that should NATO intervene in Ukraine with troops on the ground, Russia would launch an all-encompassing nuclear response, potentially leading to catastrophic consequences.
Kiselyov’s remarks did not mince words when he suggested that Russia would unleash its entire arsenal of nuclear weapons, including the Sarmat (Satan 2), Yars, and Avangard missiles, in retaliation to any strategic defeat inflicted by the West. He menacingly stated, “If NATO countries send their troops into Ukraine in order to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, then the very moment about which Putin once said, ‘Why do we need the world, if there is no Russia in it?’ would come. Then everything would be launched by us, in every direction.”
Furthermore, he elaborated on specific targets beyond Ukraine, indicating that US decision-making centers and launchers on land and sea were already in Russia’s crosshairs, along with a stark message to France and the United Kingdom, hinting at the overwhelming power of Russia’s Poseidon torpedo and its claimed capability to submerge the British Isles under a nuclear tidal wave.
This is not the first instance of such aggressive rhetoric from Moscow. Russia has previously indicated that it would consider NATO nuclear weapons and facilities in Poland a direct threat, and has responded to Poland’s willingness to host NATO nuclear warheads with promised countermeasures to ensure its security. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia would take “all the necessary retaliatory steps” should such deployments occur.
The situation has been further exacerbated by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko’s announcement that Russia had relocated nuclear weapons to his country, while Poland’s leader, President Andrzej Duda, has stated that Poland would be prepared to host NATO nuclear weapons in response.
These developments are occurring against the backdrop of increased tensions and military activities in Eastern Europe.
Amid these unfolding events, the UK has taken significant steps to bolster its defense capabilities. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak committed to raising the UK’s defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030, marking the most substantial defense boost in a generation. This increase in defense expenditure is aimed at fortifying Britain’s defenses against the perceived growing threats from Russia, Iran and North Korea.
