New Orleans Archdiocese Faces Child Sex Trafficking Investigation Amid Historical Abuse Allegations

    Published on

The Archdiocese of New Orleans is embroiled in a profound legal and moral crisis as it becomes the focus of a criminal investigation, suspected of participating in child sex trafficking and covering up the systematic abuse of minors by its clergy over several decades. A search warrant executed by Louisiana State Police, granted by Judge Juana Lombard, has opened a window into alleged abuses that have shaken the very foundations of the archdiocese’s trust with its community.

The impetus for the warrant was based on alarming testimonies from multiple sex abuse victims. These statements included distressing accounts of children being transported to different parishes and even out of Louisiana to be sexually abused. According to investigator Scott Rodrigue’s affidavit, the abused were allegedly given “gifts” to signal to other priests that they were targets for further sexual exploitation. It is reported that, in some instances, children were instructed to skinny-dip in a pool at the New Orleans Seminary and were subsequently sexually assaulted—actions that were not isolated incidents but rather part of a “common occurrence.”

The search warrant reveals the church’s alleged dark history of not only failing to protect the innocent but also actively contributing to their exploitation. As per the obtained documents, “previous archbishops … not only knew of the [widespread] sexual abuse and failed to report all the claims to law enforcement, but [also] spent archdiocese funding to support the accused.” These allegations, if proven true, represent a grave betrayal of trust and a severe violation of moral and legal responsibility.

One document specifically points out that an unnamed archbishop “was aware of rampant sexual abuse throughout the archdiocese,” which he allegedly disregarded or covered up. Allegations include that the archdiocese made monetary payments to victims or their families to dismiss the allegations quietly.

The investigation’s origins can be traced back to retired priest Lawrence Hecker, who, despite being clinically diagnosed as a pedophile, was apparently reassigned to another parish with the archbishop’s blessing. It was his case that eventually led to the unearthing of documents and testimonies that pointed to a potential history of sex trafficking within the archdiocese.

The church, once a source of solace and guidance for its followers, is now accused of heinous crimes that undermine its very mission. A spokesperson for the Archdiocese of New Orleans has indicated that the archdiocese “has been openly discussing the topic of sex abuse for over 20 years,” and that they are committed to cooperating with law enforcement.

The search warrant’s scope is extensive. It includes demands for personnel files, financial records, communications within the archdiocese, and any correspondence with the Vatican or other archdioceses regarding sexual abuse. Specific attention is directed toward “Canon 489 files,” the secret archives that only the bishop of a diocese typically has access to, indicating the thoroughness with which authorities are pursuing potential evidence.

The warrant explicitly requests access to all communications exchanged between the Archbishop of New Orleans and any department within the Vatican regarding complaints or reports of child sexual abuse within the archdiocese. Additionally, it seeks any communications between the Archbishop of New Orleans and other Archbishops or Cardinals concerning child sexual abuse allegations involving clergy members from New Orleans.
