The United States Navy has taken a significant step to acknowledge the valor and hard-fought efforts of its sailors operating in the hazardous waters of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro has authorized a range of combat awards for actions taken in response to increased aggression since October 19, during heightened tensions due to the Israel-Hamas conflict and subsequent Houthi missile and drone strikes.
This acknowledgment comes against the backdrop of a previously perceived reticence by Pentagon officials to recognize the direct threats faced by U.S. Navy vessels in the region. Del Toro, in a statement, lauded the professionalism and dedication of Navy and Marine Corps personnel, emphasizing their pivotal role in national and economic security.
Since October 19, the Navy has been engaged in a relentless campaign against the Houthi rebels, downing nearly 200 drones and missiles and striking over 400 targets in Yemen. In a stunning display of defensive action, the crew of the USS Carney was recognized for their December 16 engagement where they successfully intercepted 14 Houthi drones.
Awards authorized include the prestigious Combat Action Ribbon, personal military decorations with “V” for valor and “C” for combat, and the Air Medal with the Strike/Flight device.
The recent attacks underscore the escalating threat posed by Houthi militants, with the Navy countering 129 instances of aggression since November 19. This ongoing conflict has not only posed a threat to U.S. military and commercial vessels but also brought into question the initial assurances by Navy and Pentagon officials, who had downplayed the targeting of U.S. ships in the area.
Despite the danger, official details on specific awards remain sparse, with Navy officials citing operational security as a reason for withholding information. However, some award details have surfaced, such as the Combat Action Ribbon for the USS Carney and a Bronze Star for its commander, presented by Gen. Erik Kurilla, head of U.S. Central Command.
