Houthi Rebels Down US MQ-9 Reaper in Escalation Over Gaza Conflict

    Published on

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for the downing of a US MQ-9 Reaper drone, in what is becoming an increasingly volatile situation. The drone was reportedly shot down over the Marib province, a region still held by forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which has been in exile. Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree stated that the drone was engaged in “hostile actions” and was brought down by a surface-to-air missile.

The incident is the latest in a series of confrontations between the Iran-backed Houthis and US interests in the region, including a recent increase in maritime attacks. This escalation comes amid the Houthis’ intensified campaign related to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip, which has seen significant civilian casualties.

According to the U.S. Maritime Administration, since November, the Houthis have conducted over 50 attacks on shipping in the strategically crucial Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, seizing one vessel and sinking another. Furthermore, an incident was reported by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center involving a Panama-flagged crude oil tanker off the coast of Yemen’s port city of Hodeida, adding to the tensions in the region’s maritime routes.

Despite these claims, the U.S. military has not yet publicly acknowledged the downing of the Reaper drone. The Reaper, with a price tag of around $30 million, is a high-altitude long-endurance aircraft capable of flying up to 50,000 feet and can remain airborne for up to 24 hours.

This loss comes at a time when the U.S. and its allies have stepped up an airstrike campaign against the Houthi rebels in Yemen, and these aerial skirmishes have become a hallmark of the wider regional conflict. The string of successful downings by the Houthis points to an increase in their military capabilities, likely bolstered by their main benefactor, Iran, which has the technology for high-altitude attacks.

The Houthi slogan, “God is the greatest; death to America; death to Israel; curse the Jews; victory to Islam,” was reportedly chanted in footage released by the group purportedly showing the surface-to-air missile launch and strike against the US drone.
