Russia’s Defence Ministry has declared the recapture of the strategically important village of Andriivka in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, a territory previously reclaimed by Kyiv’s forces last summer. This move signifies a notable shift in the ongoing conflict, as Ukrainian forces grapple with manpower and ammunition shortages.
“Units of the Southern grouping of troops liberated the settlement of Andriivka in the Donetsk People’s Republic,” stated the Russian Defence Ministry, although the claim has yet to be independently verified. Kyiv liberated Andriivka in September, but the village was described as “unrecognisable” with extensive damage. Now, it has become a focal point once again in the intense military chess game being played out in eastern Ukraine.
Andriivka, situated approximately six miles south of the occupied town of Bakhmut, serves as a critical juncture for both sides. “Capturing and holding Andriivka is our path to a breakthrough on the right flank of Bakhmut and the key to the success of the entire further offensive,” stated a spokesman for Ukraine’s Third Assault Brigade last year, which participated in the operation to reclaim the village.
The loss of Andriivka underscores the broader challenges faced by Ukrainian forces, who are currently engaged in intense battles across several fronts in the east, including Chasiv Yar and Klishchiivka. “These advances of 50 metres forward, 50 metres back mean nothing. We also enter their territory, and they enter ours,” said Kyrylo Sazonov, a Ukrainian soldier from the 41st Separate Mechanised Brigade. This back-and-forth movement highlights the precarious nature of the conflict, where tactical gains are often ephemeral.
The current phase of the conflict has also seen Ukraine ramping up strikes on Russian assets in the Black Sea and Crimea. Recent Ukrainian attacks destroyed a Russian air defence system, heavily damaged a submarine, and struck two patrol ships. The UK Ministry of Defence reported that these strikes, including a high-profile attack on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Sevastopol, have inflicted “catastrophic” damage.
Meanwhile, Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, has become another flashpoint. Russian strikes on Thursday killed at least seven people and injured 16 more, prompting President Volodymyr Zelensky to decry the attacks as “brutal” and accuse Moscow of exploiting Ukraine’s insufficient air defences. “Russian terrorists are taking advantage of the fact that Ukraine still lacks sufficient air defence protection,” Zelensky said.
In response to the intensified conflict, nearly 11,000 residents in the Kharkiv region have fled their homes, seeking safety from the barrage of Russian missiles. Moscow asserts that its offensive in Kharkiv aims to create a buffer zone to protect Russian border villages from Ukrainian attacks.
