Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán Raises Doubts Over Russian Military Strategies in Ukraine

    Published on

As the conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate, with fresh offensives deepening the humanitarian crisis, a surprising voice of criticism towards Russian military strategy has emerged from an ally: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. His comments add a layer of complexity to the dynamics of international alliances and the on-the-ground realities of the conflict.

In a candid radio interview, Orbán, whose nation is a NATO member yet maintains a close relationship with Moscow, expressed skepticism about Russia’s ability to prevail in Ukraine. He stated, “If the Russians were strong enough to defeat the Ukrainians in one go, they would have been defeated, but that’s not what we’re seeing.” This acknowledgment from a leader known for his warm ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, highlights a growing realization that Moscow’s military campaign may be faltering.

Despite Russia’s significant military investments and the intensification of its offensive in northeastern Ukraine, including a missile attack on Kharkiv that killed at least seven civilians, the Ukrainian defense has remained resilient. The admission by Orbán reflects an unease that is likely resonating among other leaders who have sought to balance their relationships with both Russia and the rest of Europe.

Orbán’s evaluation of the situation also touched on the broader implications of the war, addressing speculations around Russia’s intentions towards NATO countries. With Hungary being a part of NATO, Orbán underscored the stark contrast in military capability between the alliance and Ukraine, suggesting the improbability of Russia challenging NATO directly. “NATO’s strength is not comparable to Ukraine’s. A hundredfold, maybe a thousandfold, so I don’t think it’s logical to assume that Russia, who can’t even deal with Ukraine, will suddenly come and catch the whole Western world,” he explained.

This dose of reality from the Hungarian premier comes against the backdrop of Russian attempts to sustain its military campaign through a “partial mobilization.” According to reports, Russia has been recruiting substantial numbers of soldiers each month, with the Russian army now being 15% larger than when the full-scale war began. Financial incentives have played a pivotal role in bolstering the ranks. Despite these efforts, and a reported recruitment of over 385,000 soldiers in 2023, the relentless Ukrainian defense continues to deplete Russian resources and morale.
