Putin and Lukashenko Convene in Belarus Amid Nuclear Drills and Striking Developments in Crimea

    Published on

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Belarus marks a critical moment as he and his ally, Alexander Lukashenko, engage in discussions around tactical nuclear exercises. This visit to Minsk, closely following a series of foreign tours aimed at bolstering support for his leadership and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

During his visit, Putin expressed the intention to address “all this, including security matters, which we have given substantial attention to,” highlighting the extensive range. This exchange between Russia and Belarus comes at a moment when the two countries are ready to enhance their military ties, especially concerning Russia’s deployment of nuclear arms in Belarus.

Earlier this week, Russian forces began what they refer to as “practical training” with their array of tactical nuclear weapons. Putin stated that the drill will consist of three stages, and Belarus – where Russian nuclear weapons are stationed – will participate in the second stage.

Lukashenko said “Belarus and Russia have no desire to attack anyone but must be able to use the weapons to “defend” themselves.”

Putin described the drills as “planned and routine” and said Russia and Belarus are not “escalating anything.” He added that “the two countries need to coordinate because they cannot allow any “failures” or “mistakes,” and he pointed out that NATO members conduct similar exercises.”

In the shadow of these discussions, the situation in Ukraine continues to be volatile, with recent strikes by Kyiv’s forces on the illegally annexed Crimean peninsula. Reports surfaced claiming that these strikes resulted in civilian casualties in Simferopol, though independent confirmation is pending. These strikes represent a defiant Ukrainian response within a context of continued Russian occupation and militarization.

Beyond military maneuvers, Putin’s visit is also shrouded in political debate. The Russian president questioned the legitimacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose term was due to end on May 20. Zelenskyy, citing martial law restrictions, has ruled out holding elections during the current conflict.

Furthermore, international initiatives to resolve the Ukraine crisis are ongoing, including an upcoming peace conference scheduled for June in Switzerland. Russia has not been invited and Putin has downplayed the conference’s significance.
