The Ukrainian military has staunchly halted the Russian advance in the strategic northeastern region of Kharkiv, according to official statements and reports from both Ukrainian and international sources. Since May 10, when Moscow launched a significant offensive in this sector, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have not only repelled the Russian troops but have initiated successful counter-attacks.“The Ukrainian Defense Forces have stopped Russian troops in the Kharkiv sector… The situation is under control, counter-offensive actions are underway,” the army said.
The relentless defense has been buttressed by the recent delivery of American weapons, including sophisticated GLSDB bombs, Javelin anti-tank missiles, and 155-mm artillery shells. The New York Times adds that “the Ukrainian military in the area has adopted a strategy of slow retreat to stronger positions. This defensive tactic of incremental withdrawals has allowed the smaller Ukrainian forces to inflict significant losses on the aggressors.”
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, has witnessed a flurry of intense Russian assaults, one of which killed at least seven civilians as per local authorities. Despite Moscow’s intention to create a “buffer zone” to prevent future Ukrainian attacks on its territory, the Ukrainian response has not only stopped the Russian forces but also created a scenario where Ukraine is now taking the offensive.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, who recently visited the region’s capital, signaled the Ukrainian Defence Forces have effectively countered the Russian troops in the Kharkiv sector, with the situation under control. Zelensky, a constant presence in the fightback against Russian aggression, has been coordinating defense efforts in the region.
The regional governor Oleg Synegubov reported that more than 11,000 people had been evacuated from the wider Kharkiv region due to the conflict. Meanwhile, Ukrainian infrastructure, particularly the railway network, has suffered significant damage due to Russian strikes, disrupting critical lines of communication and supply.
Ukrainian forces carried out missile strikes on the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula overnight. The conflict has impacted civilian life significantly, with Russian attacks on power infrastructure leading to nationwide power outages and substantial damage. Ukraine’s Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko has reported over $1 billion in damages to the energy system.
