In a troubling discovery, a Richmond, California man’s home became the site of a staggering arms bust when state authorities found an arsenal of 248 firearms and approximately one million rounds of ammunition. The seizure, a stark reminder of the pervasive issue of illegal weapons in the United States, was disclosed by Attorney General Rob Bonta.
The extensive cache included a diverse and potent range of weaponry: 11 military-style machine guns, 133 handguns, 37 rifles, 60 assault rifles, seven shotguns, 3,000 large-capacity magazines, 20 silencers and four flare guns. Several hand grenades were also found, but according to the statement, they were identified by the local bomb squad as inactive. According to Bonta, “In our efforts to retrieve guns from a prohibited individual, we found hundreds of allegedly illegal weapons and approximately one million rounds of ammunition.”
In California, owning a machine gun without authorization is illegal, as the state has some of the strictest gun control laws in the U.S.
The authorities did not disclose the address of the man. The unnamed man, discovered to have illegally hoarded these weapons, was legally barred from owning guns in California, which boasts some of the nation’s most stringent gun laws. The agents involved in the investigation found, in addition to the firearms, dozens of rifle receivers and pistol frames.
Inert grenades were also part of the findings, though local bomb squads later confirmed these were not active. The visual evidence of the seized armament was shared by the attorney general’s office, showcasing a miniature armory with belt-fed machine guns and long-range caliber rifles among the confiscated items.
California’s Armed and Prohibited Persons System (APPS), which was established in 2006, is designed to track individuals who have legally purchased firearms but subsequently become ineligible to possess them.
District Attorney Robert Banta said in a statement that the unnamed man is legally prohibited from owning firearms in California.
