In the wake of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the battleground state of Arizona has found itself at the epicenter of a political quagmire. Amidst the chaos, a proposed constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution has emerged as a beacon for many voters. President Joe Biden, who narrowly won Arizona in 2020, is now facing a conundrum: while his alignment with reproductive rights aligns with a majority of Arizona voters, his support in the state appears not to be surging as expected.
Jenny Valdovinos, a young voter from Phoenix, encapsulates the dilemma faced by Biden and the Democrats in the state. While she is unequivocal in her support for the amendment, her conviction wanes when it comes to her support for Biden, highlighting a lack of action on other pressing issues as well.
The recent CBS News/YouGov poll starkly illustrates the chasm between the support for abortion rights (65% in favor) and backing for Biden (47% against Trump’s 52%). This split is reflective of the broader concerns of Arizona voters, who prioritize the economy and the border over reproductive rights, as highlighted by Mike Noble, CEO of the nonpartisan polling firm Noble Predictive Insights.
Arizona for Abortion Access spokesperson Chris Love has emphasized the need to reach beyond the Democratic base and communicate with the broader electorate on the issue of personal health care decisions. This includes Arizonans who are registered as independents or with “other” parties, accounting for 35% of voters, and who may not necessarily be swayed by party affiliation alone.
The Biden campaign is cognizant of the challenges and has a concerted strategy in place. “The Biden-Harris campaign and Democratic coordinated campaign aren’t taking any support for granted,” says Jacques Petit, a spokesperson for the Biden campaign in Arizona. This includes a series of visits by Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as a cadre of reproductive rights groups actively canvassing the state.
Furthermore, Democrats are capitalizing on Trump’s polarizing stance on abortion, as highlighted by Mini Timmaraju, President of Reproductive Freedom for All. The contrast between the two candidates on this issue is being used to mobilize voters, with Timmaraju pointing out the importance of “defining Trump and making sure folks hear from Trump in his own words.”
Despite Biden’s and the Democrats’ efforts to leverage the abortion rights issue, the impact on his support in Arizona remains uncertain. The complexity of local politics, where a singular issue like abortion does not resonate in isolation from other concerns such as immigration and economic anxieties, renders the political terrain challenging to navigate.
However, the commitment to the issue is evident. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s visit and many Democratic lawmakers’ district events are testament to the concerted efforts to highlight Biden’s pledge to protect abortion rights. The question remains whether these efforts will translate into increased support for Biden among Arizona voters.
